Marvel Rivals team-up combos are the bonus abilities and passive buffs that activate when an anchor hero plus one or more partner heroes are both selected on the same team. They’re the closest thing the game has to a draft-phase decision tree – lock the right anchor and the partner picks fall into place; lock the wrong anchor and your team-up indicator stays grey in champ-select. Season 8 added Primal Punishment (Devil Dinosaur and Punisher), buffed Chilling Assault’s radius from 9m to 12m, and notably kept every other team-up intact – the first time in the game’s history that no team-ups were retired between seasons.

Below is the full Season 8 team-up reference: which pairings work in solo queue, which need a coordinated comp, the anchor-first decision tree a boost team uses to build a comp around a team-up rather than around an anchor pick, and a tier table for the active pairings. This is the working read after two weeks of Season 8 ladder, not a wiki list.

How team-ups actually work

Team-ups are pairings between specific heroes that grant an extra ability or passive when both are picked. There are two flavours: passive team-ups stay active for as long as both heroes are selected and give a permanent buff or bonus; active team-ups give an extra ability on a cooldown, usable like any other skill. The champ-select screen shows a team-up indicator the moment both heroes lock in. There are roughly 23 active team-ups in Season 8 across the roster.

Three rules hold across all team-ups:

  • Anchor first. The anchor is the hero that gives the team-up its name and usually receives the most direct buff. Lock the anchor before the partner; the partner is downstream of the anchor pick.
  • Most anchors are Vanguards or Strategists. Anchor-role distribution skews tank and support. Pure-Duelist anchors are rare (Iron Man’s Nano-Ray is the headline case). If you’re solo-queuing the comp, lock the anchor when you take Vanguard or Strategist, not when you take Duelist.
  • Team-ups don’t replace picking the right hero. Two strong individual heroes with no team-up still beat a weak anchor + partner pair that has one. Don’t lock Iron Fist solely because Luna Snow is already on the team – he needs to be the right pick on top of the team-up rider.

For the full Season 8 patch context including which anchor heroes got buffed alongside the team-up changes, the Season 8 patch notes are the canonical source. The cross-role read on which anchors are actually picked at Diamond+ lives in the current season meta guide.

The Season 8 team-up tier table

Diamond+ snapshot of which team-ups are actually moving the needle in ranked. The lower-tier pairings aren’t broken, they just don’t anchor a comp – they’re a small bonus on top of two heroes you’d pick anyway. Tier Team-up Anchor Partner(s) Effect
S Primal Punishment Devil Dinosaur Punisher Punisher rides DD, gains damage reduction + shared heals; DD gets +100 HP (NEW S8)

Building a comp around a team-up

The best ranked comps in Season 8 aren’t six individually optimal picks – they’re comps built around a team-up anchor. Three patterns hold consistently.

Primal Punishment brawl comp

Lock Devil Dinosaur Vanguard, call “Punisher please” in champ-select chat, and the team-up does most of the work. Punisher gets damage reduction and shared heals while mounted, which makes him survive the kind of focused fire that usually deletes a stationary turret hero. Devil Dinosaur picks up 100 bonus HP and becomes the hardest single hero in the game to delete. Fill out the comp with Cloak and Dagger plus Mantis for the Strategist pair, Psylocke for the independent flank Duelist, Magneto for the second Vanguard. The diamond-to-GM job we ran last week opened champ-select chat with “lock Punisher second, I’m taking Devil Dinosaur” and won 23 of 30 games where the teammate actually picked Punisher. The other 7 we played anyway and still won most of them, but the team-up math is the difference.

Fantastic Four anchor comp

The most comp-eating team-up in the game. Invisible Woman + Mister Fantastic + Human Torch + The Thing fills four of your six slots on its own and grants the full quartet damage resistance plus continuous bonus HP regen. The Strategist slot is locked (Invisible Woman), the Vanguard slot is locked (The Thing), and you get Mister Fantastic and Human Torch as your two Duelists. Fill out with Cloak and Dagger as the second Strategist and any second Vanguard you like (Magneto works). The comp wins by attrition – nothing dies fast because the bonus HP regen pulls you out of damage windows that should have killed you.

Dive comp with Chilling Assault

Luna Snow anchors, Iron Fist or Emma Frost partners. Iced Out Diamond Spell Field grew from 9m to 12m in Season 8, which is the difference between a dive that lands and a dive that gets focused at the edge of the bubble. Pair Luna Snow with Iron Fist as the rider, Emma Frost as the second Vanguard (she dives with Iron Fist), Mantis as the second Strategist for the +100 movement speed enabler, and Spider-Man as the independent dive Duelist. This is the strongest dive comp in the patch and it’s the comp Diamond+ lobbies most often see when they don’t ban Devil Dinosaur first.

Team-up picks that work in solo queue

Most team-ups assume your teammate will lock the partner. Three of them survive a solo-queue lobby that ignores you in champ-select chat.

  • Primal Punishment. Devil Dinosaur is strong on his own; the Punisher rider is a bonus. Lock the Vanguard, call the team-up in chat, and if a teammate plays along you’re set; if not, Devil Dinosaur is still S-tier.
  • Stars Aligned. Captain America is a top-tier Vanguard at Diamond+. If a teammate locks Winter Soldier, you get +100 HP and +5% damage for free. If they don’t, CapAm is still good.
  • Chilling Assault. Luna Snow is a top casual Strategist and a respectable ranked pick. Iron Fist or Emma Frost are independently viable picks if a teammate happens to lock either. The 12m bubble is a bonus.

The team-ups that don’t survive solo queue are the ones that demand specific partners (Arcane Order needs both Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch; Soul Perseverance needs Adam Warlock plus Star-Lord plus Mantis; Fantastic Four needs four specific picks). Save those for stack play or coordinated lobbies above Diamond. (The Doctor Strange + Scarlet Witch combo is the one your duo partner who plays exactly two heroes will always demand. Indulge them once per session.)

Team-up math by rank

How much team-ups actually matter changes by rank. Lower ranks ignore champ-select coordination, higher ranks build comps around it.

  • Bronze-Silver: team-ups rarely fire because lobbies don’t coordinate. Pick the right individual heroes and the LP comes. Don’t sacrifice a solid pick to chase a team-up rider.
  • Gold-Platinum: some team-ups happen. Primal Punishment is the most reliable because Devil Dinosaur is the obvious first-pick and Punisher is a casual top-tier Duelist regardless.
  • Diamond-GM: team-up coordination is now the norm. Champ-select chat actually gets read; the team-up indicator drives partner picks. This is the rank where the difference between team-up comps and individual-heroes comps shows up in win-rate.
  • Celestial-Eternity: team-ups are core comp construction. Pre-made coordination is common; Fantastic Four and Thunder Squad as four-and-three-hero anchors actually get drafted intentionally.

The community guide on this exact comp-construction logic – the r/marvelrivals roles, team composition, strategy, and combos guide – hits roughly the same beats: anchor first, partner second, comp third. For the upstream call on which Vanguard anchor to lock, the current Vanguard picks drive the team-up choice. For where these comps actually convert into wins by rank, the Marvel Rivals rank ladder sets the climb context.

Frequently asked questions

How do team-up abilities work in Marvel Rivals?

Team-ups are bonus abilities or passives granted when an anchor hero plus one or more partner heroes are both selected on the same team. Some are passive (active for as long as both are picked); some are active and have a cooldown. The champ-select screen shows a team-up indicator the moment both heroes lock in.

What is the new team-up in Season 8?

Primal Punishment. Devil Dinosaur is the anchor, Punisher is the partner. Punisher mounts Devil Dinosaur’s back, can only use normal attacks while mounted, gains damage reduction, and shares received heals with Devil Dinosaur. Devil Dinosaur picks up 100 bonus HP as the anchor. It’s the strongest team-up in the patch.

What is the best team-up in Marvel Rivals?

Primal Punishment is the strongest pairing in Season 8 – the patch is built around it. Fantastic Four is the most comp-anchoring team-up because it locks four of your six slots on its own. Chilling Assault sits S-tier after the 12m radius buff. Arcane Order turns Scarlet Witch into a backline carry. Pick by comp need, not by raw tier.

Are team-ups required to win Marvel Rivals games?

No. Top-tier solo-queue picks like Psylocke and Cloak and Dagger don’t depend on team-ups – they carry comps without one. But a comp built around a strong anchor plus partner pair has a real win-rate edge over one that isn’t. Don’t sacrifice a solid pick to chase a team-up rider, but don’t ignore the rider when it’s free either.

What is the Fantastic Four team-up?

Invisible Woman is the anchor; Mister Fantastic, Human Torch, and The Thing are the partners. All four gain damage resistance and continuously generate bonus health to recover lost HP. It’s the most comp-eating team-up in the game – the quartet fills four of your six slots, and the comp wins by attrition.

Did Marvel Rivals remove any team-ups in Season 8?

No. Season 8 is the first time in the game’s history that no team-ups were retired between seasons. Primal Punishment was added as a brand-new pairing and Chilling Assault got a radius buff (9m to 12m); the rest of the team-up roster carried forward intact.

Marvel Rivals team-up combos are the difference between a comp that wins because the heroes are individually good and a comp that wins because the heroes amplify each other – and Season 8’s Primal Punishment is the cleanest example of the second kind the game has shipped. If you’d rather not learn the anchor-first comp logic from scratch on a fresh patch, let our team handle the climb – we run Primal Punishment, Fantastic Four, and Chilling Assault comps on the actual current patch, same account, same MMR profile.
