Here is the LoL Blue Essence economy in one line: finish the free Battle Pass track each Act and you earn roughly 1,300 to 1,600 BE a week, which is one 2,400 BE champion about every twelve days. The advice everyone still repeats, grind levels and open the capsules, has been dead since January 2025, when Riot moved the Blue Essence faucet onto the Battle Pass and stopped paying you anything for levelling past 30.

We run League accounts every day, which mostly means we watch people hoard 40,000 BE for a year and then spend it on a chroma for a champion they have four games on. Below are the current earn rates, what champions cost after the price cut, and the arithmetic nobody bothers with: whether the shard in your loot tab is worth more as essence or as a cheap unlock.

Where Blue Essence actually comes from now

The free Battle Pass is the faucet and almost everything else is a rounding error. Riot’s Blue Essence and Account XP update from 15 January 2025 raised the per-Pass milestone Blue Essence from 4,750 to 9,000 and pushed the repeating Epilogue milestones from 50 BE to 750 BE. The Pass has paid 9,000 BE per Act ever since, in three lumps: 2,000 at milestone 6, 3,000 at milestone 16, and 4,000 at milestone 26.

The other number catches returning players out. Levelling used to hand you a Champion Capsule every level after the fourth, forever. Patch 25.S1.1 removed that. Past level 30 the milestone track pays emotes and profile borders, so an account at level 412 earns Blue Essence at exactly the same rate as an account at level 31. If you came back after two years expecting the level grind to fund a champion pool, that is why your balance has not moved.

Every Blue Essence source, and what it pays

Two sources matter and the rest are one-time bonuses you either already collected or never will. The Pass track runs 48 milestones at 400 Battle Pass XP each, so 19,200 BXP clears the free rewards, and there are two Acts per season with three seasons a year, per the League of Legends Wiki Battle Pass page, checked August 2026.

Add it up for a fresh account and the pile is bigger than most people realise. Levels 1 to 30 pay about 12,950 BE in direct drops, the eight Awakening missions add 6,400 BE, and day 6 of the Daily Play Rewards hands over 6,300 BE in a single lump. That is roughly 25,650 BE before you ever queue ranked, plus five free champions of your choosing from days 1 to 5 and a stack of shards on top. Claim the Daily Play Rewards before level 20 or they disappear, which is the most common way new players throw away 6,300 BE.

What champions cost in Blue Essence

Champions are half what they used to be. Riot cut the Blue Essence price of every champion by 50% in patch 25.05, announced in the Hextech chests and getting champs dev post from 26 February 2025, the first free-to-play price reduction in the game’s history. The tiers below are our count off the LoL Wiki champion list, fetched 28 August 2026, covering all 173 released champions. Time-to-afford assumes about 1,400 BE a week, which is what finishing the free Pass track works out to.

2,400 BE64About 12 daysAatrox, Aphelios, Aurora, Azir
3,150 BE5About 16 daysAmbessa, Mel, Smolder, Yunara, Zaahen

Two champions sit outside the tiers because Riot could not resist. Jhin costs 1,234 BE and Vel’Koz costs 1,618 BE, the golden ratio, which is the nerdiest possible way to price a tentacle. Both still disenchant at 630 BE like the rest of the 1,575 bracket.

Total the whole roster and owning all 173 champions at store price comes to 273,002 BE. At 9,000 BE per Act across six Acts a year, that is a four to five year project on Pass income alone, so nobody should be planning it.

If you would rather spend the next month climbing than budgeting, our League of Legends division boost team runs solo queue and duo climbs on your schedule, and they arrive owning the champions the current patch wants. It skips the part where you save for two weeks to try a jungler you end up hating.

Disenchant or keep? Run the numbers first

A champion shard disenchants for 40% of the champion’s store price and upgrades into the champion for 60%. That 60% is the whole point of the loot system, and most people misjudge what it is worth. Upgrading a shard and disenchanting a shard then buying the champion at full price later cost exactly the same amount of Blue Essence.

Take a 2,400 BE champion. Upgrading the shard costs 1,440 BE. Disenchanting it gives you 960 BE, and buying the champion outright afterwards costs 2,400 BE, so you are down 1,440 BE net. Identical. A shard is therefore never a trap, and holding one is free. The only real cost of disenchanting is giving up a 960 BE discount you might have wanted later.

Shard tierDisenchantUpgradeYou will definitely play themYou might, one dayYou will never touch them
225 BE90 BE135 BEUpgrade now, 135 BE is nothingUpgrade anyway, it is cheaper than decidingDisenchant, 90 BE is 90 BE

3,150 BE1,260 BE1,890 BEUpgrade now, you save 1,260 BEHoldDisenchant only to fund a champion you want more

The rule: hold by default, upgrade the moment you want to play that champion, and disenchant only when you need liquid Blue Essence for a different champion this week. Shards do not expire and the loot tab does not charge rent.

One caveat has teeth. Disenchant values are pegged to the champion’s store price, so when Riot cuts a champion’s price the cash-out value falls with it. Riot has said it wants to decouple the two, but the wiki’s crafting table still shows disenchant locked at a flat 40% as of August 2026. If you are sitting on shards for older champions that look overdue a price cut, that is the one case where cashing out early is defensible.

Mastery tokens are gone, and honor pays in Pass XP

If you remember combining Mastery tokens with Blue Essence to hit Mastery 6 and 7, that system no longer exists. Patch 14.10 removed Mastery tokens and the 2,450 and 2,950 BE upgrade costs that went with them, and patch 25.13 removed Mastery Sets, the last mastery feature that paid raw Blue Essence. Mastery now runs on Marks of Mastery and milestone missions that pay Battle Pass XP, which our champion mastery breakdown covers in full.

Honor works the same way. No Honor capsule hands out essence any more. Holding Honor level 3 or above triggers occasional 150 BXP drops, and the frequency rises at levels 4 and 5. Both systems feed the same pipe: mastery and honor generate Battle Pass XP, Battle Pass XP clears milestones, and milestones pay the Blue Essence. If you want BE faster, the answer is always the same. Finish the free track.

The chroma trap

The Essence Emporium is where Blue Essence goes to die. It opens roughly twice a year and sells chromas at 2,000 BE, mystery icons at 1,500 BE, mystery ward skins at 4,900 BE, and Urfwick at 150,000 BE. That last one is over half the cost of the entire champion roster, spent on a skin for a champion you probably do not play, which is a very funny thing to do once and a bad idea twice.

Cosmetics are fine. They just compete with the only currency that buys you options in champ select, and options are what move a win rate. A player sitting on 20,000 BE with three champions owned in their role is in a worse position than a player with 0 BE and eight. Veterans on r/leagueoflegends argue the opposite, one player describing sitting on 60,000 BE with every champion owned and nothing to do with it, and they are right. Once the roster is complete, BE is confetti. Before then, it is the only thing standing between you and a functional pick.

Which champions to actually buy

Buy for one role, not for the roster. The fastest useful spend from a standing start is three or four champions in a single position: a blind-pick comfort pick, one pick that handles the matchup your comfort pick loses, and one scaling option for games that go long. Our champion pool size guide makes the case that a small pool climbs faster than a wide one, and the Blue Essence question follows from it: which three champions should you own for your lane.

At current prices that is cheap. Three 1,575 BE champions is 4,725 BE, roughly three and a half weeks of Pass income, and most roles have a perfectly good 225 or 675 BE option to start with. If you are picking your first few, our best champions for beginners by role list is built around exactly this: low mechanical floor, high impact, cheap.

Where this advice falls apart

Blue Essence is not the bottleneck most players think it is, which makes this whole guide worth less than it looks. Free champion rotation covers ten champions a week, a fresh account already gets five free picks plus 25,650 BE of drops, and almost nobody in Iron through Emerald is losing games because they could not afford a champion. They are losing because they play six champions badly instead of three well.

Owning more champions does not raise a win rate on its own. It usually lowers it, because a wider pool means fewer games on each pick and mastery curves are real. The player who unlocks fifteen champions in a month and plays all fifteen will climb slower than the one who bought two and spammed them.

The old level-grinding advice is worse than inefficient now, because it pays zero. Queuing bot games to level up earns no Blue Essence past level 30, so any guide still telling you to farm levels for capsules is describing a system Riot deleted in early 2025. Spend the hour in ranked, where the games at least count for something.

Frequently asked questions

How much Blue Essence do you get per week?

Roughly 1,300 to 1,600 BE a week if you finish the free Battle Pass track inside an Act, counting the 9,000 BE in milestone drops plus the capsule shards. Play fewer than about ten games a week and you will not clear the track, so the figure drops proportionally.

How much Blue Essence do you need to unlock a champion?

Between 225 and 3,150 BE depending on the tier. Most of the roster sits at 1,575 or 2,400 BE, which is about eight to twelve days of normal play. Jhin and Vel’Koz are priced oddly on purpose at 1,234 and 1,618 BE.

How much Blue Essence to buy all champions?

273,002 BE at store price for all 173 released champions, by our sum of the wiki champion list in August 2026. Champion shards cut that considerably if you upgrade rather than buy outright, but it is still a multi-year project on free income.

Do you still get Blue Essence for levelling up?

Only up to level 30. Levels 1 to 30 pay about 12,950 BE in direct drops plus champion shards. After 30 the milestone track pays emotes and profile borders only, since patch 25.S1.1 removed the per-level Champion Capsule.

Should I disenchant champion shards or keep them?

Hold by default. Upgrading costs 60% of the store price and disenchanting pays 40%, and disenchanting then rebuying later costs exactly the same as upgrading now, so keeping a shard costs you nothing. Disenchant only when you need the essence this week.

What is a Champion Capsule worth in Blue Essence?

A normal Champion Capsule’s shards disenchant for between 810 and 1,260 BE according to the LoL Wiki, checked August 2026. The Glorious Champion Capsule at the end of the free Pass track is worth more, and Riot does not publish its exact range.

Short version: the free Battle Pass is the only Blue Essence source that matters, it pays about 9,000 BE an Act, and that funds a champion every week and a half at the tiers most people buy from. Hold your shards, upgrade the ones you will play, and keep your balance away from the Essence Emporium until your role’s pool is done. Then buy the chroma, you have earned it.

And if the honest answer is that you want the rank rather than the roster grind, our League of Legends division and placement boost team handles the climb while you spend your Blue Essence on whatever you like.
