Call of Duty Ranked Play is the CDL-rules competitive playlist: 4v4 Hardpoint, Search and Destroy and Overload, restricted loadouts, and a visible Skill Rating (SR) that moves you from Bronze to Iridescent and, for the best 250 players, the Top 250 leaderboard. The live version right now is BO7 ranked, and it’s in its final stretch. Treyarch’s Season 06 is a three-week sprint that started September 17, and Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23 with no Ranked Play date announced yet. This guide covers every rank and its SR gate, exactly how much SR you win and lose, placements, the rules, the rewards, and what carries into MW4.

We play Call of Duty ranked every day, including the part of the ladder where losses start costing 40 SR, so expect numbers rather than vibes.

How Black Ops 7 ranked works

You win matches, gain SR, cross thresholds and rank up. To unlock Ranked Play at all you need 50 wins in matchmade Multiplayer (Party Games and limited-time modes don’t count). Your first time in, you’re Unranked until you win three placement matches, and the game shows a projected minimum starting rank after each placement win. From then on, SR decides everything, and since the Season 04 overhaul it’s fully visible: Treyarch removed hidden MMR, so every point gained or lost is itemized in the post-match summary.

Every match starts with a veto. The lobby shows three map and mode combinations, each team vetoes one, and the remaining option is played (if both teams veto the same one, it’s random between the other two). If a match is gone, your team can forfeit once everyone votes for it: in Hardpoint once the winning team reaches 100 points, in Control after the first round, in Search and Destroy after the third round. A forfeit counts as a normal loss. All of this is on Activision’s Ranked Play support page, which is worth a skim before your first placement.

Every BO7 rank and its SR requirement

BO7 has eight ranks. The first six split into three divisions each, Iridescent is a flat 10,000 SR gate, and Top 250 is a leaderboard position rather than a threshold. The division thresholds below are the published Season 2 list, and the loss sizes are from Treyarch’s Season 04 SR rules. Season 06 rewards are in the last column.

The gaps between divisions grow as you go. Bronze divisions are 300 SR apart, Silver 400, Gold 500, Platinum 600, Diamond 700, and Crimson 800 to 900. The ladder gets longer at the same moment losses get more expensive, so Crimson plays like a different game. Most climbs stall there rather than in Diamond, and “I was Diamond last season” doesn’t mean much once you’re past 7,500.

How SR gains and losses are calculated

A BO7 ranked win is worth +20 SR as a base, and everything else depends on how you played relative to the lobby. Treyarch’s Season 04 overhaul made the formula public. On a win you get:

  • Base win: +20 SR at every rank.
  • Scoreboard bonus: finish in the top 4 of the 8 players and you get extra SR, more the higher you place.
  • Opponent rank adjustment: outperform higher-ranked players and you get more; get outscored by lower-ranked players and your total shrinks.
  • Underdog team bonus: extra SR for beating a significantly higher-ranked team, and a deduction if the team you beat was ranked lower.

Losses mirror that. The base loss is -20 in Bronze through Diamond, -30 in Crimson, then climbs from -40 at 10,000 SR to -65 at 20,000+. Season 06 added two more modifiers, per the official Season 06 patch notes. A loss where you finish 5th to 8th on the scoreboard costs an extra 10 to 40 SR. And the opponent rank adjustment now has fixed values: outscoring someone 3+ rank tiers above you is +20 SR, 6+ tiers is +40, while outscoring someone 3+ tiers below you is -20 and 6+ below is -40. Treyarch’s stated reason is SR inflation at the top ranks.

So the scoreboard matters on losses almost as much as on wins. A close loss where you finish 2nd costs you the base amount. A close loss where you finish 7th can cost double. The reaction to the overhaul was mostly relief that SR finally made sense, as the r/CoDCompetitive thread on the SR overhaul shows, with the usual argument about whether individual stats should count in a team game.

Loss forgiveness

Some losses cost nothing. Activision lists five cases:

  • Your first loss of each day.
  • Your first three losses of a new season (after placements).
  • Your first three losses after ranking up into a new rank.
  • Any loss where a matchmade teammate quit mid-match (not a party member).
  • A reduced loss if that teammate quit and rejoined.

The rank-up protection is the one to plan around. Three free losses after every promotion means the first session in a new rank is the cheapest time to play risky, so don’t log off right after ranking up.

Placements and season resets

Season resets are soft for the bottom half of the ladder and a quick re-check for the top. Bronze, Silver and Gold players keep their rank and SR into the next season. Platinum and above must win one placement match to be placed again. New accounts need three placement wins to get their first rank.

The bigger reset comes with each new game. Every mainline Call of Duty has its own Ranked Play, so your BO7 rank does not follow you into MW4. BO7 launched on November 14, 2025, and its Ranked Play arrived with Season 02 on February 5, 2026, about 12 weeks later. Activision hasn’t dated MW4 Ranked Play, so if MW4 follows the same pattern, expect a gap of weeks to months where Call of Duty has no live Ranked Play at all. Treyarch’s own Season 06 sign-off ends with “we’ll see you again in MW4.”

If you’d rather lock in the BO7 Season 06 camos before the sprint closes and not spend your last three weeks grinding Crimson, our Call of Duty ranked boost team handles Ranked Play climbs and camo grinds on your schedule.

The CDL ruleset: modes, maps and restrictions

Ranked Play uses the Call of Duty League ruleset, so you get fewer toys and more gunfights. The modes are CDL Hardpoint, Search and Destroy and Overload, all 4v4. The map pool per the Call of Duty wiki:

ModeMapsWhat wins it
HardpointCliff Town, Colossus, Den, Gridlock, Sake, ScarRotating to the next hill early, trading on the hill instead of chasing kills
Search and DestroyDen, Fringe, Gridlock, Plaza, Raid, ScarOpening picks, not dying first, a sniper who can hold a lane
OverloadDen, Exposure, ScarCarrier escort and spawn control; Exposure returned to the pool in Season 06

Loadouts follow CDL rules and the pros’ Gentleman’s Agreements. Everything is unlocked for everyone, but only assault rifles, SMGs, pistols and melee weapons are allowed, with snipers limited to Search and Destroy. Many attachments, equipment pieces, perks and scorestreaks are restricted, Perk Greed is the only allowed wildcard, combat specialties and overclocks are off, and friendly fire is on. The restriction list moves mid-season. Season 06 unrestricted the VMP and some of its attachments, and it has shown up in a lot of ranked classes since. WZStats’ ranked loadout tracker is the quickest way to see what’s legal and popular this week.

Party rules depend on rank. Bronze through Diamond can queue in parties of up to four. Iridescent and Top 250 are limited to duos. Crimson is the grey zone: Treyarch’s Season 04 notes opened it to full parties, while Activision’s support page still lists Crimson as duo-only, so check the lobby before you invite your squad.

How long it takes to climb

Activision publishes no climb data and no rank distribution, so this table is our own model, not an official figure. Assumptions: an average win of +40 SR (base 20 plus a typical top-4 scoreboard bonus), base losses only (-20, or -30 in Crimson), and about 20 minutes per match including the lobby and veto. Loss forgiveness shaves a little off; bottom-half scoreboard losses add a lot back.

ClimbSR neededGames at 55% win rateGames at 60% win rateRough hours (55% / 60%)
Gold I to Platinum I1,500~115~94~38 / ~31
Platinum I to Diamond I1,800~138~113~46 / ~38
Diamond I to Crimson I2,100~162~131~54 / ~44
Crimson I to Iridescent2,500~294~208~98 / ~69

Read the Crimson row twice. At a 55% win rate you net about 8.5 SR per game in Crimson against about 13 below it, so the last 2,500 SR takes longer than Gold to Diamond combined. A three-week final season is a real deadline with numbers like that. A player placing into Diamond on September 17 who plays a few hours a night has a realistic shot at Crimson camos and a much slimmer one at Iridescent.

From our own queue: the fastest Crimson-to-Iridescent run we tracked this year took a player with a 63% win rate about 9 days of full evenings. He finished top 2 on the scoreboard in roughly 70% of his wins, and that scoreboard bonus is where the saved time came from. Players who win at the same rate but finish 5th keep falling short of 10,000.

Per-rank climb tips

Bronze to Gold

Losses are only -20 here, and Gold carries over between seasons, so mistakes are cheap. Play objective. In Hardpoint, time on the hill wins more matches at this level than kills do, and the scoreboard bonus follows the wins.

Platinum and Diamond

This is where teams start to trade properly. Learn the Hardpoint rotations on the six maps and when to leave a hill early. In Search and Destroy, stop taking the first fight of the round. A lot of lost rounds in Plat start with someone dying in the first 15 seconds.

Crimson

Losses cost -30 and a bottom-half finish can add up to 40 more, so bad sessions get expensive fast. Play with a duo you trust, stop after two losses in a row, and use the free losses after each rank-up.

Iridescent and Top 250

From 10,000 SR every loss is at least -40, rising to -65 at 20,000+, and you’re limited to duos. Top 250 goes to players who stack good games late in the season. One hot streak rarely holds a spot.

Where this system works against you

The transparent SR system has a real weakness: it measures you with individual stats in a team game. A support player who holds the hill in Hardpoint and dies doing it can finish 6th in a win and lose SR in a close defeat, while a slayer who stat-pads off-hill climbs faster. Season 06 made this sharper by adding up to 40 extra SR loss for bottom-half finishes. If your role is the anchor, BO7 ranked underpays you.

Our climb table has limits too. It assumes a steady +40 per win, which a player who regularly finishes 5th won’t get, and it ignores the tier adjustments that swing individual matches by 20 to 40 SR either way. The biggest caveat has nothing to do with SR: BO7 ranked is ending. Anything you climb now is for the Season 06 camos and calling cards, not a rank that follows you into MW4.

Frequently asked questions

Is Black Ops 7 Ranked Play still live?

Season 06 is the final BO7 Ranked Play season. Treyarch calls it a three-week sprint from September 17, so it ends around the second week of October. After that, the next Call of Duty ranked season will be in Modern Warfare 4.

Will Modern Warfare 4 have Ranked Play at launch?

Activision hasn’t announced a date. MW4 launches October 23, 2026, and BO7’s Ranked Play arrived with Season 02, about 12 weeks after its launch, so a delay after launch is the norm.

How much SR do you lose in BO7 ranked?

The base loss is -20 in Bronze through Diamond, -30 in Crimson, -40 from 10,000 SR, rising to -65 at 20,000+. In Season 06, finishing 5th to 8th in a loss costs an extra 10 to 40 SR.

How much SR do you need for Iridescent?

10,000 SR. Top 250 is the 250 highest SR totals among Iridescent players, so it’s a leaderboard position rather than a threshold.

How many wins do you need to unlock Ranked Play?

50 wins in matchmade Multiplayer. Wins in Party Games and limited-time modes don’t count.

Does your rank reset every season?

Partly. Bronze, Silver and Gold players keep their rank and SR. Platinum and above must win one placement match to be placed again at the start of each season.

To sum up: eight ranks from Bronze to Top 250, +20 SR base per win with bonuses for placing top 4, losses that grow from -20 to -65 as you climb, and a Crimson wall where most climbs stall. BO7’s final ranked season is a three-week sprint, and MW4’s Ranked Play doesn’t have a date yet. If you want the Season 06 camos without spending those three weeks in Crimson, our team can take on your Ranked Play climb or a camo grind while you get ready for MW4.
