Your Marvel Rivals counter-pick in Season 8 starts with a single read: counter the body that’s killing you, not the ult that’s flashy. Magneto eats Hela. Namor breaks dive. Hawkeye bullies stationary Strategists. Magneto + Adam Warlock + Hawkeye is the cleanest triad against the season’s Devil Dinosaur first-pick because no single hero hard-counters him. The patch shapes the counter map – the Season 8 Vanguard reshuffle, the Mantis dive-enabler rework, and the Spider-Man Spectacular Spin buff all moved which counters actually pull weight. This guide is the working draft sheet a boost team uses on solo-queue jobs Gold through Celestial.
Below is the per-role counter map for the current patch, the captain-phase draft logic (last pick is the counter-pick slot), and the three comps that break the most-locked Diamond+ constructions. None of it is “if A then B” theorycraft. It’s the picks we lock in the draft phase and the reasons we lock them. The underlying patch context is in the Season 8 meta guide.
How counter-picking actually works in the Marvel Rivals draft
The captain-phase pick order goes: team A first pick, team B first and second pick, team A second and third pick, team B third and fourth pick, team A fourth and fifth pick, team B fifth and sixth pick, team A sixth pick. The last-pick slot on each side is the counter-pick window because your captain sees the entire opposing comp before locking. The first two picks set the comp axis (brawl, dive, or ranged); the middle picks flesh out the role coverage; the last two picks counter what you see. Treat the last pick as the counter-pick slot, not as the “I want to play my comfort hero” slot. The Season 8 balance pass driving the current matchup math is in the Season 8 patch notes.
The Season 8 counter-pick map
The per-hero counter list our team uses on draft. “Counter” here means: pick this hero into that hero and you flip the matchup from coinflip or losing to favorable, holding everything else equal. | Opposing hero | Role | Primary counter | Why it works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Devil Dinosaur | Vanguard | Magneto + Hawkeye + Adam Warlock (comp answer) | No clean single-hero counter; shield uptime + ranged pressure + revive utility breaks the Primal Punishment ride-in |
| Magneto | Vanguard | Wolverine | Closes range under the shield, drains Vanguard HP with the dash chain |
| Hela | Duelist | Magneto | Shield bubble eats the volley uptime; ult window closes her DPS |
| Iron Man | Duelist | Hawkeye | One-shot threshold on a flying squishy is a clean read |
| Spider-Man | Duelist | Namor | Turrets shred on crash-in; Spectacular Spin doesn’t outrange them |
| Iron Fist | Duelist | Namor or Doctor Strange | Namor turrets stop the dash chain; Strange portal punishes commits |
| Psylocke | Duelist | Magneto + Hawkeye | Vanguard shield blunts the flank, Hawkeye out-ranges the kit |
| Punisher | Duelist | Wolverine or Spider-Man | Mobile heroes close range before Ammo Overload wins the duel |
| Cloak and Dagger | Strategist | Spider-Man + Hawkeye | Dive the heal anchor, force the swap; ranged finishes if the dive lives |
| Mantis | Strategist | Iron Fist | Mobility chases through the +100 movement-speed buff she enables |
| Loki | Strategist | Cloak and Dagger | Cleanse breaks the illusion utility he has left after the nerf |
Counter-picking by role
The map above tells you what to lock. The harder skill is reading the comp axis before the opp finishes drafting. Three axes matter in Season 8 and each has a different counter logic.
Counter the brawl comp
Brawl comps run two heavy Vanguards (Devil Dinosaur and Magneto, or Devil Dinosaur and The Thing) plus sustained-DPS Duelists (Punisher, Hela). The counter is ranged pressure plus mobility. Lock Hawkeye for the ranged half and Wolverine or Spider-Man for the mobile half; you win by refusing to brawl on their terms. Magneto on your side blunts the inbound Hela ult window. Cloak and Dagger anchors the heal economy because brawl comps win prolonged team-fights when your heals fall off.
Counter the dive comp
Dive comps run Mantis (post-rework) + Spider-Man + Iron Fist + Psylocke crash-ins with Magneto or Emma Frost as the front shield. Namor is the cleanest single-hero answer because his turrets shred dive on contact and his ranged kit doesn’t reposition into the dive’s preferred range. Adam Warlock as the second Strategist gives you revive utility on the first kill the dive secures. (We’ve watched Adam Warlock revives undo three Spider-Man ults in a row at Diamond. The “ult-counter Strategist” pick is real.)
Counter the backline-protect comp
Backline-protect comps run Doctor Strange + Loki + Hela + Star-Lord with Luna Snow / Iron Fist on Chilling Assault. The counter is dive that punishes the slow positioning. Spider-Man + Iron Fist + Psylocke is the standard answer. Lock Mantis on the Strategist side to enable the dive’s repositioning – the +100 movement-speed buff matters most against this axis. Backline-protect is the comp most often run in Plat and below; it loses tempo against dive at Diamond and above.
The mirror error is locking ranged into backline-protect because you assume the opp can’t peel. They can. Hela peels for a Cloak and Dagger anchor better than most lobbies expect, and a Hawkeye on your side gets shut down by Doctor Strange portal mobility. Dive remains the right answer even when it feels counter-intuitive. (The Hawkeye player who insists his ranged counter is real – and gets bullied off the angle every team-fight – is a Diamond stereotype for a reason.)
If your team can’t read the comp axis fast enough to counter-pick in the captain phase, that’s the climb plateau and it’s harder to fix than mechanical hero practice. Our Marvel Rivals rank boost team runs the counter-map above on every draft – same account, same MMR, real boosters reading the opp comp before locking. Role-based and hero-specific options sit alongside the standard rank push.
The last-pick counter logic
Last pick on each side is the counter-pick window. You see four of the opposing team’s six locked picks before your last pick resolves; lock the counter that breaks their comp.
- If the opp locked dive (Spider-Man + Iron Fist + Mantis), last pick Namor or Doctor Strange. Namor’s turrets break the crash-in; Strange’s portal punishes commits.
- If the opp locked ranged-protect (Hela + Iron Man + Doctor Strange), last pick Magneto if available, else Wolverine. Shield uptime closes the ranged window; Wolverine drains the Vanguard.
- If the opp locked brawl (Devil Dinosaur + Magneto + Punisher), last pick Hawkeye or Hela. Ranged pressure refuses the brawl on the opp’s terms.
- If the opp locked Cloak and Dagger first Strategist, last pick a Duelist with a single-target ult (Hawkeye, Psylocke). Force them to use the defensive ult window on a single kill.
The most common last-pick error in Diamond and below is locking the comfort pick instead of the counter. The r/marvelrivals current-meta thread hits the same beat: the players who climbed in Season 8 are the players who treated last pick as the counter slot, not as the “I get to play my main” slot.
Mid-game swap is a counter-pick
Hero swap is available between rounds and at spawn after a death. The cost is much lower than most lobbies treat it as. Three swap moments come up often enough to memorize.
- Round 2 swap. If you lost round 1 because the matchup was hard losing (Psylocke into Magneto-Cloak-Adam, for example), swap at the round break. Hawkeye into the same comp wins the next two rounds.
- Post-ult swap. If your kit got shut down by an enemy ult window, swap into the hero who counters that ult specifically rather than playing through it. Cloak and Dagger’s defensive ult on Spider-Man’s buffed Spectacular Spin, for example.
- Late-game lock-in swap. If you’re holding the lead and the opp is forcing a Hail Mary dive, swap your Duelist to Namor at spawn. The dive comp collapses on Namor turrets harder than on any other answer.
The team-up table also shifts based on these mid-game swaps. If you swap into Namor against dive, you lose the Primal Punishment compatibility but you’re not running Devil Dinosaur in that draft anyway. The full pairing map and the cross-counter math sits in the team-up combos guide.
The GM job last week where we counter-picked Iron Fist into a Spider-Man last pick and the Spider-Man swapped to Punisher between rounds: we hadn’t pre-banned Punisher, the Iron Fist counter stopped mattering, lost the round. (Lesson: counter-picking and ban priority are the same skill; if you commit to one without the other you get punished both ways.)
Frequently asked questions
What is the best counter-pick to Devil Dinosaur in Marvel Rivals?
There isn’t a clean single-hero hard counter. The working answer is a comp triad: Magneto for shield uptime that blunts the Primal Punishment ride-in, Hawkeye or Hela for ranged pressure that bullies the brawl, and Adam Warlock for revive utility that survives the first big team-fight. The cleaner play is to ban Devil Dinosaur first and skip the counter-pick problem entirely; if both teams have committed bans elsewhere, the triad above is the play.
Who counters Hela in Season 8?
Magneto. His shield bubble math eats Hela’s volley uptime and the ult window closes her DPS faster than any other Vanguard pick. Wolverine works as a secondary counter if you can close range under the volley, but the kit-on-kit answer is Magneto shield front with Cloak and Dagger heal anchor behind. Hawkeye also out-ranges her in a static team-fight if your Vanguard can hold the angle.
How do you counter dive comps in Marvel Rivals?
Namor is the cleanest single-hero answer because his turrets shred Spider-Man and Iron Fist on crash-in. His ranged kit doesn’t reposition into the dive’s preferred range, which means he punishes commits without trading positioning. Comp-wise, Magneto + Namor + Cloak and Dagger + Adam Warlock breaks most current dive constructions before the ult window opens.
Should you counter-pick the ult or the body?
Body first, ult second. Heroes are on the map for the full team-fight; ults are a 6 to 12-second window. Counter-pick the body that’s killing you for the other 80% of the game. The exception is Spider-Man’s buffed Season 8 ult – it’s become a real kill threat, and Cloak and Dagger’s defensive ult or Adam Warlock’s revive utility specifically counter it.
Who is the best last-pick counter in Marvel Rivals?
Magneto for ranged comps, Namor for dive comps, Adam Warlock for ult-heavy comps. Last pick is the counter-pick slot in the captain phase because you see four of the opp’s six picks before locking. The most common Diamond-and-below draft error is locking the comfort hero last instead of the counter; closing that gap is the single biggest draft-skill upgrade most players can make.
Can you counter-pick mid-game in Marvel Rivals?
Yes. Hero swap is available between rounds and at spawn after a death. Swap if the matchup is hard losing – a Psylocke into a Magneto-Cloak comp can swap to Hawkeye between rounds without losing tempo. The swap penalty in Marvel Rivals is materially lower than most lobbies treat it as; refusing to swap on a losing matchup loses more games than swapping on a winning one.
Counter-picking is the part of the Marvel Rivals draft that separates a Diamond climb from a Diamond plateau – the players who learn to read the comp axis in the captain phase climb the next tier; the players who lock comfort picks every game don’t. If your draft phase keeps fumbling the last-pick window, let the team draft for you. Same account, same MMR, real boosters reading the opp comp every game.
