If you only remember one thing: a wave pushed into the enemy turret is a gank waiting to happen, and a wave frozen near yours is free CS with a moat around it. Master four states – freeze, slow push, fast push, and crash – plus the cheater recall, and you win lanes you used to lose. This guide gives you the decision table for when to do each, and why wave control is the single biggest laning skill gap between ranks.

We coach this on boost orders more than any mechanic, because it is the cheapest LP a stuck player can find. You do not need faster hands to climb out of Silver. You need to stop shoving every wave into the enemy tower and wondering why the jungler keeps showing up. class="ez-toc-section-end">

Every wave is in one of four states, and your job is to pick the one that matches your plan. Get this vocabulary locked before anything else, because the rest of the guide is just deciding which one to use and when.

Freeze – you hold the wave just outside your own turret, keeping the enemy minions two to three ahead of yours. You last-hit only, sometimes tanking a minion or two to stop your wave from pushing. The enemy has to walk deep into your side to farm, where your jungler lives.

Slow push – you kill only the enemy minions that would otherwise shove your wave, letting your own wave slowly stack into a big group. You are building a wave to crash later.

Fast push (shove) – you kill everything as fast as possible to send the wave crashing into the enemy turret. Fastest way to reset, roam, or contest an objective, and the most dangerous state to be caught in.

Crash – the moment a wave slams into the enemy turret and the tower starts eating minions. What you do in the two seconds around a crash (recall, dive, roam) is where games are won.

Minion mechanics decide all of this. Melee minions hit harder and soak more; caster minions die faster and do chip damage; the cannon (siege) minion is the tanky one that spawns every third wave until 15 minutes, then every second wave. A wave naturally bounces back toward whoever has more minions on the board, which is exactly why a freeze holds itself once you set it up. The full damage and aggro values live on the Riot Wiki minion entry if you want the raw numbers, and the community’s r/summonerschool complete guide to minion waves is the thread most of us cut our teeth on.

Video: Skill Capped Challenger LoL Guides (YouTube).

Freezing: the skill that wins you lanes for free

Freezing is the most powerful and most under-used wave state below Diamond, full stop. When you freeze, the enemy laner has two bad options: walk up to farm and eat your entire kit plus a possible gank, or give up the CS and XP entirely. Both feed you. You are winning the lane by standing still, which is the laziest good habit in the game.

To set a freeze, you need the wave slightly on your side with the enemy holding two to three more minions than you. Stand behind your last caster minion and last-hit only. If your wave starts to push, let a minion or two hit you (tank it, do not attack) to slow it down. Done right, the wave parks itself a bit outside your turret range and stays there, and the enemy has to overextend to touch it.

Freeze when you are ahead and want to starve them, when you are being camped and want the wave safe, or when you are waiting on your jungler to path top-side for a dive. The one time not to freeze: when you have a recall you badly need or an objective spawning, because a freeze glues you to lane. The most common Emerald mistake we untangle on orders is the player who mechanically outplays their lane, then perma-shoves into the enemy tower, gets collapsed on twice, and loses a lane they had won three times over. One freeze would have saved the whole game.

Slow push and fast push: building and spending tempo

Slow push when you want a big wave to arrive later; fast push when you need to be somewhere else now. That is the entire distinction, and knowing which you want stops you from randomly clicking minions.

A slow push means you only kill the enemy minions that threaten to push your wave (usually the casters), and you leave your own wave alone to stack. Over two or three waves it snowballs into a big group that crashes hard into the enemy turret. Use it before a recall so you leave a wave that eats turret damage while you shop, before a dive so the minions tank the tower for you, or before rotating to Dragon or Herald so the enemy has to choose between defending farm and contesting the objective.

A fast push is the opposite: kill everything immediately, crash the wave, and get out. You fast push to reset on your terms, to roam mid after crashing top, or to deny the enemy a recall of their own by forcing them to answer your wave. The cost is real – a fast-pushed lane leaves you standing near the enemy turret with the wave gone, which is prime gank real estate. Never fast push blind. Ward the river first, or you are just gift-wrapping yourself for the jungler.

The crash and the cheater recall

The cheater recall is the single most efficient tempo trick in laning, and most players below Platinum have never heard of it. Here is the move: you build a slow push, crash the big wave into the enemy turret, and recall the instant the tower starts killing your minions. Because the wave is deep and dying to the turret, you lose almost no CS while you are back. You buy your item spike, heal to full, and teleport or walk back before the next wave hits your range.

Done cleanly, you come back to lane with a completed item, full health, and zero CS lost, while your opponent either had to recall on a worse back or is now missing farm. That item lead is often the whole reason one laner starts winning every trade. Nail the timing (which is really just a recall-timing problem – we break the full cadence down in our recall timing guide) and you get a snowball for free every few minutes.

The crash itself is a decision point, not just an event. When your wave hits the enemy tower, ask: do I recall (cheater back), do I dive (if you have the wave and a jungler), or do I roam (crash then leave, forcing them to catch the wave under tower)? A crash you do nothing with is a wasted wave. A crash you convert is a lead.

The when-to-do-each decision table

Here is the cheat sheet. Match your situation on the left to the wave state on the right. This table is the thing to screenshot.

Situation

Wave state

Why

You are ahead and want to starve the enemy

Freeze

Denies CS and XP, forces overextension into your jungler

Enemy jungler is camping you

Freeze near your turret

Wave sits safe, gank has no free kill to set up

You want to recall without losing CS

Slow push then crash (cheater recall)

Wave dies to turret while you shop, you lose almost no farm

Objective (Dragon, Herald) spawning soon

Slow push toward their tower

Wave crashes while you rotate, splits their attention

You want to roam mid or gank

Fast push then leave

Crash denies their recall and buys you roam time

You are behind and just need to survive

Let it push to you, farm under turret

Safest CS, minimizes gank exposure

You have a jungler pathing to you for a dive

Slow push then crash on their arrival

Minions tank tower shots, dive succeeds

Notice how often the answer is freeze or slow push, and how rarely it is “mindlessly shove.” That imbalance is the whole lesson. Most lost lanes are lanes shoved for no reason.

If reading a decision table is one thing and executing it live at 4 a.m. in your promos is another, that is exactly the gap our team closes. Our League of Legends rank boost boosters run these wave states on autopilot, so if you would rather see a clean climb than grind the muscle memory yourself, that is the shortcut. Just people who have done it a few thousand times.

Why wave management is the biggest skill gap by rank

Most players below Diamond lose lanes they mechanically won, and the reason is almost always wave state. In our experience across boost orders, the single most common fix for a hardstuck Emerald account is not “hit your skillshots better” – it is “stop shoving into their turret with no vision.” A player who freezes correctly denies the enemy farm and XP passively, and a player who shoves blindly hands the jungler a free objective’s worth of gold every few minutes.

This is downstream of everything else too. Your CS numbers are a symptom of your wave control – the players with the highest farm are not clicking minions faster, they are just never losing waves to bad states or deaths. If your CS per minute is stuck, the wave is usually the cause, and the CS per minute benchmarks by rank will show you the gap you are trying to close. Here is roughly how wave-management competence tracks with rank, based on what we see on orders (our read, not an official Riot stat):

Rank band

Typical wave-management habit

Iron to Silver

Auto-attacks minions constantly, perma-shoves, no concept of freezing

Gold to Platinum

Last-hits cleanly but still shoves by default, dies to ganks on pushed waves

Emerald

Knows the terms, freezes inconsistently, mistimes crashes before objectives

Diamond and up

Sets deliberate freezes, cheater recalls for item spikes, crashes on a plan

Cross-checked against the mechanics breakdowns on Mobalytics’ wave management breakdown, the throughline is the same: the higher you climb, the more every wave is a deliberate choice rather than a reflex to click the nearest minion.

The honest weakness: wave management can pin you in place

Wave management is powerful precisely because it commits you, and that commitment is also its trap. A freeze glues you to lane, so if you tunnel on holding a perfect freeze while your team is getting aced at Dragon, you have optimized a lane and lost a game. Slow pushes take real time to build, and if you misread the clock you crash your wave a beat too late to help an objective. And a cheater recall assumes you can get back before the next wave – blow the timing and you bleed the exact CS you were trying to save.

The fix is not to abandon wave control, it is to keep one eye on the map. Wave state serves your win condition, not the other way around. When the game asks you to leave a perfect freeze to go win a fight, leave it. The best laners set a wave and then read whether the map lets them cash it in.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most important wave management skill in LoL?

Freezing. It denies the enemy CS and XP while keeping you safe from ganks, and it is the skill lowest-elo players almost never use because shoving feels more active. Learn to freeze first and your win rate moves before your mechanics do.

When should I freeze a lane?

When you are ahead and want to starve the enemy, when you want the wave parked safely because you are being camped, or when you are setting up a dive with your jungler. Hold the enemy minions two to three ahead of yours just outside your turret and last-hit only.

What is a slow push in League of Legends?

Killing only the enemy minions that would push your wave, so your own wave slowly stacks into a big crash. You use it to build a wave before recalling, before a dive, or before rotating to an objective so the wave crashes and denies turret damage while you are away.

What is a cheater recall?

You crash a large wave into the enemy turret, then recall the instant the tower starts killing your minions. You get back to lane before the next wave arrives, so you buy your item spike and heal without losing CS or XP.

Why do I keep getting ganked in lane?

Almost always because your wave is pushed toward the enemy turret with no vision. A shoved wave puts you deep and far from your tower, telegraphing exactly where the free kill is. Keeping the wave closer to your side removes most gank pressure for free.

Does wave management matter more than mechanics for climbing?

Below Diamond, usually yes. Clean combos help, but players stuck in Silver through Emerald almost always lose lanes they mechanically won because they hand the enemy free ganks and lost CS through bad wave states.

Wave management comes down to four states and one habit: freeze when you are ahead or vulnerable, slow push to build a crash, fast push only with vision, and cheater recall for free item spikes. Get the decision table above into muscle memory and you stop losing lanes you already won. It is the highest-value laning skill you can learn, and it costs nothing but the discipline to stop clicking minions on reflex.

If you would rather see the climb happen while you learn the theory in the background, let our team carry the climb – our boosters live in these wave states every game, and a clean division jump is often just a few well-managed lanes away.

LoL wave management explained: when to freeze, slow push, fast push, crash, and cheater recall.
