Nail those and you gank into an empty lane, dodge the counter-gank, and take objectives while the enemy jungle is on the far side of the map. Below is the booster-team version: how to read the start, the clear math from one sighting, which wards actually track, and how to call it so your team listens (current patch, last checked July 2026).

Tracking is the mirror image of your own jungle pathing. You already know that a Lee Sin red-side start means a level 3 mid gank around 3:00. The enemy jungler is running the same logic, so their path is not random, it is readable. The whole game is watching for the tells that leak their route and then doing a little arithmetic. Do it well and you will feel like you have a maphack. Do it badly and you will keep dying to a gank you “had no way to know about” (you did).

<div id="ez-toc-container" class="ez-toc-v2_0_83 counter-hierarchy ez-toc-counter minions. Whichever buff the enemy laners walk over to help clear at 1:20 to 1:40 is the side the enemy jungler started. Two botlaners chip at their bottom-side buff, that jungler started bottom. A midlaner who shows bottom-side to leash, then walks back to lane late, just told you the same thing.

The start side is the seed for the entire early path, because junglers clear in a direction, not a scatter. A bottom-side start on the blue team means Red, then the adjacent camps, then a play around 3:00 near bot or mid. Combine the leash read with a couple of lane behaviors and you can call the first gank before it happens.

What you see

What it usually means

Your read

Enemy botlane leashes bottom-side buff

Jungler started bottom (Red on blue team)

First gank threat is bot or mid around 3:00

Enemy toplaner leashes top-side buff

Jungler started top

Top or mid is the level 3 gank lane

Both solo lanes shove hard at 1:30 to 2:30

They have vision or feel the jungler is elsewhere

Expect a gank on the pushed-in lane soon

A laner suddenly plays safe with no reason

They see the jungler on their minimap

Jungler is on that side right now

No leash at all, laners walk straight to lane

Full-clear jungler skipping tempo

Low early gank risk, farm and shove

Jungle tracking fundamentals breakdown by Virkayu.

The clear timers you actually have to memorize

You cannot track what you cannot time, and the whole trick rests on a handful of numbers that never change between games. Camps spawn at 1:30. After you clear a small camp it comes back in about 2:15, buffs come back in about 5:00, and the first Scuttle Crabs spawn at 3:30. Those figures are our read of the current jungle values against the LoL Wiki jungle page (last checked July 2026); Riot retunes them by patch, so glance at Riot’s patch notes if a season update just dropped.

Event

Timer

Why it matters for tracking

Camps spawn

1:30

The start-side ward has to be placed before this

Small camp respawn

~2:15 after clear

Predicts when they return to a farmed camp

Buff respawn

~5:00 after kill

A missing buff timer tells you their loop length

First Scuttle

3:30

Both junglers converge here, the first skirmish window

Level 3 reached

~3:00 to 3:15

The earliest a 3-camp ganker can be in your lane

The reason these numbers are worth memorizing: they convert a sighting into a prediction. If you know the enemy jungler cleared their raptors and the small camp respawns in 2:15, you know roughly when they will be back on that side, which tells you when the opposite side is safe. Pair the timing with the champion, since a fast-clear jungler covers more ground per minute than a slow one. If you are unsure how quick a given pick clears, cross-check it against op.gg’s jungle champion stats and against the champions in our roundup of the junglers that climb solo queue.

The math from a single sighting

One sighting is worth more than most players realize, because a jungler cannot teleport. See them once, note the time and the location, and you can rule out half the map for the next 30 to 45 seconds. The mental model is a widening circle: from the point where you saw them, they can only travel so far before you would need to worry about the far lane.

Concrete example. You spot the enemy jungler finishing their Raptors on blue side at 3:30. Raptors sit near the mid-bottom part of their jungle. From there, the fastest they reach the top lane on the opposite side is well past 4:00, so your top laner can shove and trade freely for the next 30-plus seconds. Meanwhile mid and bot should assume the jungler is nearby and respect it. That is the entire game: one sighting, one clock read, two lanes told what to do.

Last seen

At time

Can NOT be here yet

Safe action

Their bottom-side buff

~1:40

Top lane before ~3:15

Top shoves and looks for a trade

Their raptors (mid jungle)

~3:30

Far-side lane before ~4:05

Far lane pushes, near lanes respect

Ganking bot

any

Top or mid for ~20 to 30s

Opposite side takes tempo or objective

Recalling on their base

any

Anywhere for ~12 to 20s

Free window to cross the map or ward deep

Doing Scuttle on one river

~3:30+

The other river for ~25s

Contest the opposite crab or take grubs

If reading the map this way still feels like a second job while you are also last-hitting and dodging skillshots, that is the honest hard part of climbing jungle. Our LoL rank boost team does these reads on reflex because we run hundreds of games a week, and we can take an account through the ranks where tracking stops being the bottleneck. It is a shortcut, not a lecture, and your MMR profile stays intact.

Which wards actually track the jungle

Not all wards are tracking wards, and the highest-value one goes down before minute 1:30. A ward on the enemy raptor camp or a buff entrance placed before camps spawn shows you the start directly, no leash guesswork required. This is the exact trick the community keeps rediscovering; see the r/summonerschool thread on the raptor-ward trick for the low-elo-friendly version of it.

After the start read, tracking wards shift to the choke points a jungler has to path through. The tri-brush between lane and jungle, the pixel brush near river, and the entrances to the enemy quadrant you expect them to clear next. The goal is not full map coverage, which you cannot afford. The goal is one ward on the single path the jungler is most likely to take given everything you already read.

Pre-1:30 start ward: raptor camp or buff entrance, reveals the start side. Highest value ward in the game per second of information.

River and pixel brush: covers the scuttle path and the cross-map rotation at 3:30 and beyond.

Choke and tri-brush: catches the gank approach before it reaches your lane, which is the ward that literally saves your life.

Deep buff ward (with sweeper up): for laners with priority, times the enemy buff respawn so you know their loop length.

Calling it: telling your team where the jungler is

A read you keep to yourself is worth nothing, so the last skill in tracking is communication, and it has to be fast. Two pings beat a paragraph every time. A map ping on the last known location plus a danger ping toward the lane at risk communicates the whole read in under a second, and unlike chat, teammates actually register it mid-fight.

The habit that separates climbers from the hardstuck is pinging the jungler’s absence, not just their presence. “Enemy jungler bot, top is free” is a more useful call than “care top,” because it hands your teammate a green light instead of a vague warning. When we take on a client whose deaths chart is full of ganks, the fastest single fix is often forcing a ping on every enemy jungle sighting, which quietly reshapes how the whole team plays around vision.

When tracking fails (and it will)

Tracking is a probability game, not a certainty, and pretending otherwise gets you killed. A good enemy jungler will fake a path, show topside on purpose, then cut back for a bottom gank. Counter-jungling and invades scramble the respawn math because a camp cleared by the wrong team resets your assumptions. And a hard-shoving lane hands the jungler a gank setup no amount of tracking can fully cancel.

So treat every read as “most likely,” not “definitely.” If your prediction says top is safe but your gut says otherwise, ward first and commit second. The players who fall apart are the ones who trust a stale read from 40 seconds ago; the timer moved, the jungler moved, and the sighting expired. Refresh your read every time new information lands, and accept that sometimes the coinflip lands on the enemy. That is League, not a tracking failure.

Frequently asked questions

How do you know where the enemy jungler started?

Watch the leash. Whichever buff the enemy laners walk to at 1:20 to 1:40 to help clear is the jungler’s start side. A ward on the enemy raptor or buff entrance placed before 1:30 confirms it directly.

What is the easiest way to track the enemy jungler?

Ward their raptor camp before 1:30 and read the leash. Since small camps respawn about every 2:15, a single sighting plus the clock tells you when they will return and, more usefully, which half of the map they cannot reach yet.

When do jungle camps respawn?

Small camps come back roughly 2:15 after you clear them and buffs about 5:00, with the first Scuttle at 3:30. Better yet, ping the jungler’s absence (“bot, top is free”) so a teammate gets a green light, not just a warning.

Is jungle tracking only for junglers?

No. Laners who track the enemy jungle shove at the right times, ward less blindly, and dodge the gank that would have ended their lane. The jungler has the best vantage on it, but the whole team benefits from tracking.

Tracking is three reads stacked on top of each other: the leash tells you the start, the timers turn a sighting into a prediction, and two quick pings turn your prediction into a team play. Ward the raptors before 1:30, memorize the respawn clock, and refresh your read every time the map gives you new information.
