Grandmaster and Challenger cannot. That is the LoL Master duo queue rule in two sentences, and it is where most pages stop explaining. Master players queue as a pair against similarly ranked opponents, the two Apex tiers above them stay solo-only, and the restriction runs on hidden MMR rather than the badge on your profile. Below that sits a whole staircase of tier-gap rules nobody bothers to write out. So here they are, tier by tier, along with what duoing actually does to your LP.

We boost League accounts across every division, so we queue inside these restrictions daily and watch the client grey the button out for reasons players find baffling. in one line

Master is the ceiling for duo queue, and the pair has to sit close in hidden MMR. Riot pulled duo from Master and above in 2021, decided the Apex tiers had become an isolating place to play, then moved the cutoff up one step so Master could pair again while Grandmaster and Challenger stayed locked. The reasoning given at the time: duoing at the very top casts doubt on the legitimacy of the Rank 1 race, and a fair game is near impossible to build when two of the server’s strongest queue together and ten role preferences still have to be satisfied.

Two caveats apply. Korea and all China servers extend the restriction down to include Master MMR, so Master is solo-only there. And Riot keeps moving this line: Apex duo has been switched off after a reset to let MMR settle, and loosened again as a season-opening celebration. Check the client rather than a blog. The canonical write-up sits on Riot’s own ranked tiers and queues page.

Coach Rogue breaks down how duo partners actually change a climb.

The full duo queue restriction ladder, tier by tier

The base rule below Diamond is simple and almost nobody states it precisely: you can queue with anyone inside the entire tier directly above or below yours, division irrelevant. From Emerald up the windows close, and by Diamond I it stops being about tiers at all. The list below comes from the LoL Wiki’s Ranked game page, checked August 2026.

Your rank

Lowest partner allowed

Highest partner allowed

The rule in plain terms

Iron

Iron IV

Bronze I

One full tier up, nothing below to pair with

Bronze

Iron IV

Silver I

One full tier either side

Silver

Bronze IV

Gold I

One full tier either side

Gold

Silver IV

Platinum I

One full tier either side

Platinum

Gold IV

Emerald I

One full tier either side

Emerald

Platinum IV

Diamond III

Capped inside Diamond, not the whole tier

Diamond IV to Diamond II

Emerald II

Diamond II

Narrower than a full tier both ways

Diamond I

Anyone within 200 LP of your standing

An LP window, not a tier boundary

Master

A player whose hidden MMR is close to yours

Allowed, but MMR-gated rather than rank-gated

Grandmaster

No duo

Judged on hidden MMR, not visible rank

Challenger

No duo

Judged on hidden MMR, not visible rank

Where two rules overlap the tighter one wins, so an Emerald IV cannot pair with a Diamond III even though Emerald nominally reaches that far. The Diamond I 200 LP window is the other trap: it is why the client will queue you with a friend on Monday and refuse on Friday without either of your ranks changing. One of you just moved.

What “similarly ranked opponents” means at Master

The matchmaker has to be able to build a lobby your pair does not tip, and it judges that on hidden MMR rather than the tier badge. Master is a single tier with no divisions and an enormous internal spread: someone who crossed from Diamond I last night and someone parked at 600 LP are both Master and nowhere near each other in strength. You can queue while you sit in the same LP band, and the client quietly refuses once one of you has run away from the other. Riot does not show you your hidden MMR, so the queue button is the only test you get. We broke down how MMR and LP actually relate if you want the mechanics underneath it.

Why Grandmaster and Challenger still cannot duo

Population, mostly. Riot’s stated reasons are competitive integrity and queue times, and the numbers collapse those into one problem. Our read of op.gg’s NA tier data, last checked August 2026, puts Master at roughly 0.73% of ranked players, Grandmaster at 0.05% and Challenger at 0.02%, or 326 Challenger players on NA. Riot publishes no official split, so that is a tracker read.

Master is roughly ten times the size of Grandmaster and Challenger combined, so there is a real pool to build fair lobbies from. Above it there is not. When a server’s eligible population is a few hundred people and half of them are asleep, letting two of the best queue as a pair leaves the matchmaker choosing between an hour of waiting and a bad game. The r/leagueoflegends thread on high-elo duo is a fair snapshot of both camps.

What duoing does to your LP and MMR

There is no duo tax on your LP and no duo bonus either. Your gain tracks your MMR against your division’s expected MMR, and party size is not an input. Riot’s ranked FAQ has answered “do I get more LP for duoing with a higher-ranked friend” with a flat no for years: the harder lobby offsets the stronger teammate.

What duo changes is the games you are handed. The matchmaker balances around the party, so duoing above your rank puts you against opponents pitched at your partner. Win those and your hidden MMR climbs faster than your visible rank, one of the documented ways players skip a promotion. Then you unqueue, still sitting on an MMR the system built around two people, and it keeps feeding you those lobbies until your results say otherwise. That is where “my duo left and I fell off a cliff” comes from.

When a duo helps your climb, and when it hurts it

Duoing is worth the most in the elos where coordination is rarest, and it gets steadily less useful as you climb. In Silver, two people talking through a dive timer are doing something the other eight players in the lobby are not. In Master, everyone is doing that already.

Elo band

What a duo actually buys you

What it costs

Verdict

Iron to Silver

Two coordinated players in a lobby with none

Almost nothing, queue is instant

Strongest duo value on the ladder

Gold to Platinum

A reliable lane and a second brain on objectives

Slightly slower queues at peak

Still clearly worth it

Emerald

Bot lane consistency, jungle-mid tempo

Partner gap starts showing in results

Worth it if you are close in skill

Diamond

Draft coordination and a fixed lane pairing

Narrow legal windows, longer queues

Marginal unless well matched

Master

Comfort, tilt control, shared review

Longer queues, LP cost if mismatched

Social first, climbing second

Grandmaster and Challenger

Nothing, the queue is closed

Not applicable

Solo only

The pairing matters as much as the elo. Bot lane is the classic because two players share a lane for fifteen minutes; jungle and mid is sharper above Emerald because it turns every scuttle into a numbers game. We wrote up the pairings that genuinely work if you are picking a partner rather than inheriting one.

If the restriction ladder itself is the blocker, because your friend is three tiers up and the client will not let you queue, that is fixable. Our League of Legends division climb team closes the gap on your account so you land inside the same window, on your schedule.

Queue times and match quality at Master and above

Expect duo queues at Master to run noticeably slower than solo, and the gap widens the further above the tier floor you sit. Riot publishes no queue-time data, so the table below is our booster team’s observed feel on EUW and NA rather than official figures.

Queue

Eligible pool (op.gg NA, Aug 2026)

How the queue feels

What matchmaking does

Diamond, solo

~3.72% of players

Fast at almost any hour

Tight rank bands, full role respect

Diamond I, duo

Slice of that 3.72%

Fast, but the 200 LP window blocks pairings

Balances the pair, still deep pool

Master, solo

~0.73%

Fine at peak, slower off-peak

Widens the band as it waits

Master, duo

Subset gated on close MMR

Clearly slower, worst off-peak

Must fit the pair and ten role preferences

Grandmaster and Challenger

~0.05% and ~0.02% (326 NA players)

Long waits even solo

Duo disabled, band widens instead

The knock-on effect people underestimate is role quality. Satisfying a duo plus ten role preferences out of a pool of a few thousand means something has to give, and it is usually somebody’s autofill protection. Duoing at Master costs you minutes in the lobby and raises the odds that one of the ten of you is on a role they did not ask for.

The duo carry fantasy above Diamond

Duoing with a worse player at Master actively loses you LP, which argues against most of what this post has just told you. The matchmaker does not average your pair and call it a day. It builds a lobby that expects your side to perform, and if half of your side is the reason you got into that lobby, the other four players pay for it and so does your LP.

We watched this on a Master account this season. The player asked us to keep queueing with the friend he had climbed all of Emerald with, and we tracked 40 games before saying no. The pair finished slightly under 50% while the same player solo sat comfortably above it. The friend was a genuinely good Diamond player being fed Master lobbies every game, and coordination in one lane does not fix four other lanes deciding the map. (The friendship survived. The LP did not.)

The plan dies around Diamond because a coordinated bot lane stops being able to decide a game on its own. Below Emerald, two players who snowball a lane usually snowball the map. Above Diamond the enemy team punishes a losing side lane and trades objectives properly, so a duo can win bot 3-0 and still lose. Queue with your friend at Master because you enjoy it, not because it is quicker. op.gg’s live tier distribution shows how thin the air is up there.

Frequently asked questions

Can you duo queue in Master in League of Legends?

Yes. Master is the highest tier where duo is allowed, and the pair has to be close in hidden MMR so the matchmaker can still build a fair lobby. Korea and all China servers are the exception, where Master MMR falls under the Apex restriction.

Can Grandmaster and Challenger duo queue?

No. Both Apex tiers are solo-only, and the check runs on hidden MMR rather than visible rank, so a Master-badged player whose MMR reads Grandmaster is locked out too.

Can Diamond I duo with a Master player?

At the seam, yes. Diamond I runs on a 200 LP window rather than a tier boundary, so a Diamond I near the top of the division and a freshly promoted Master player can fall inside it. The client decides and greys out the button if you are outside it.

Does duo queue affect your MMR?

Not directly, but it changes the games you get. The matchmaker balances the lobby around the party, so duoing above your rank feeds you harder opponents and pushes your hidden MMR up faster than your visible rank.

What ranks can play ranked together in LoL?

Below Diamond it is one full visible tier either side, so Gold can queue with Silver, Gold or Platinum regardless of division. Above that: Emerald caps at Diamond III, Diamond IV to Diamond II is limited to Emerald II through Diamond II, Diamond I uses a 200 LP window, and Master needs close hidden MMR.

So: Master duos, Grandmaster and Challenger do not, the check runs on hidden MMR rather than the badge, and everything below Diamond follows a one-tier-either-side rule that tightens sharply from Emerald up. Riot has moved this line before and can move it again, so trust the client over any page, this one included.
