class="ez-toc-section-end">

Fortnite ranked runs on a progress bar. Every division fills from 0% to 100%. Hit 100% and you promote into the next division with the overflow, drop to 0% and you can slide back down. There is no promotion series and no visible number like LP or RR, which is why so many players have no idea how close they actually are to the next rank.

Epic’s own guide to Fortnite ranked play lists the inputs that move the bar in Battle Royale, Zero Build, Reload and Reload Zero Build:

Placement, and more precisely the storm circle you reach. Epic’s own example: reaching storm circle 8 in 5th place usually pays more than reaching storm circle 5 in 2nd.

Eliminations, weighted by timing. A kill with 20 players left is worth far more than one with 80 left.

Opponent skill. Eliminating a Diamond while you are Gold pays more than clearing a Bronze.

Damage dealt versus damage taken, plus a consistency bonus for players who stop dying off spawn.

Three rules change how you should queue. First, since the v40.00 update Battle Royale and Zero Build share one unified rank, so a Zero Build session moves the same badge your build games do. Reload keeps its own separate ladder. Second, your team is matched on its highest-ranked member, so an Unreal friend dragging a Gold duo into their lobby is doing the Gold no favors. Third, Epic gives you First Match Loss Protection once per day per ranked mode: your first match of the day cannot drop you, so if you want to take a risky hot drop, take it in that match.

The biggest structural change of the year came in v40.20. Elite and Champion used to be single ranks. Epic split each into three divisions, which took the ladder from 18 steps to 22, and recalibrated some Unreal Battle Royale players back down to Elite or Champion when it landed. The community reaction on r/FortniteCompetitive’s thread on the new ranks was mostly players discovering they were suddenly Elite 3 and four divisions away from Unreal again. Half the ranking guides on page one still say 18 ranks.

A full Bronze to Unreal solo Reload climb on controller, via Real Fax.

Every Fortnite rank in order

Here is the full Fortnite ranked ladder for Chapter 7 Season 4 (Override, v42.00), last checked September 2026. Every account that queued one ranked game after the reset and wandered off is sitting here. Climb tip: stop hot dropping. Land edge, loot, rotate early and live to storm circle 6 every game. Placement alone clears Bronze for anyone with basic mechanics. Reward: nothing this season.

Silver

Silver is 20% of players, and Silver I is roughly where the median ranked player sits. Climb tip: this is where eliminations start to matter, so take the late-game fights you can win and skip the third-party you cannot. Reward: nothing yet, Gold is the first unlock.

Gold

Gold is 7.7% of players and top 33% cumulatively. The reason Gold is thinner than Platinum in this snapshot is timing: five weeks in, a lot of returning players have already blown through it on the way back to where they finished last season. Climb tip: learn the storm. Knowing where circle 4 and 5 will pull you saves more games than any aim routine. Reward: Phantom Spray.

Platinum

Platinum is 8.8% of players and the top quarter of the ladder. Lobbies start holding zone and playing for surge. Climb tip: commit to a landing spot you can win consistently and stop contesting it on bad bus paths. Reward: Override Counter Back Bling.

Diamond

Diamond is 6.1% of players and puts you in roughly the top 16%. It is also the first rank where a bad week can undo two good ones, because early exits get more expensive. Climb tip: your endgame decides your rank now. Refresh-heavy mid game, tarp and rotate cleanly, and value top 10 over a flashy 8-kill 30th. Reward: Beastly Battle Bus Loading Screen.

Elite

Elite is 5.7% of players across its three divisions, and it is where casual habits stop working. Everyone can build, everyone can edit, and the storm circle you reach carries more weight than ever. Climb tip: play for placement in the first half, then fight on your terms in circles 7 and later, where eliminations pay the most. Reward: The Hack ‘n Slasher Pickaxe.

Champion

Champion is 2.7% of players and the top 4.4% cumulatively. These lobbies look like a Cash Cup that forgot to hand out prize money. Climb tip: play fewer, better matches. Two focused hours beat a six-hour grind where you start forcing fights at 1 a.m. Reward: Overridden Wrap.

Unreal

Unreal is 1.7% of the ladder, and it is the only rank Epic locks: once you reach it you stay Unreal until the next rank reset, and your further games move you on the global Unreal leaderboard instead. Climb tip: the grind from Champion III mostly tests consistency. Queue when you are sharp and stop when you are not. Reward: The Unrealizer Pickaxe.

Fortnite rank distribution by percentage

The Fortnite rank distribution is a steep pyramid with a very wide base. If you are Diamond, you are top 16%. Elite is where a rank stops being “good for a casual” and starts being good, full stop. And Unreal went from about 4.9% of players in January to under 2% now by tracker reads, mostly because the v40.20 split pushed four extra divisions between Diamond and the top.

If you would rather skip the part of the season where you grind through the fattest band of the ladder, our Fortnite ranked boost team handles climbs to Elite, Champion and Unreal on your schedule, with self-play and duo options if you want to be in the games yourself.

How Fortnite ranks compare to other games

A Fortnite rank means more once you line it up by percentile against ladders you already know. Fortnite Diamond and League Emerald are almost the same percentile, which is a useful reality check for anyone who assumes Fortnite ranks are inflated. And Unreal is rarer than it sounds: it sits in the same air as upper Diamond in League. If you also play battle royales outside Fortnite, the ranked logic in Apex is close enough to compare. Our Apex Legends ranks explained walks through the same placement-versus-kills trade-off with RP instead of a progress bar.

How long it takes to climb in Fortnite ranked

Climb time depends almost entirely on your average storm circle, not your kill count. Epic publishes nothing on this, so the benchmarks below come from the climbs our team runs and are ranges, not promises.

Climb

Player already at that level

Player improving into it

Bronze I to Gold I

10 to 20 matches

1 to 2 weeks of regular play

Gold I to Diamond I

20 to 40 matches

2 to 4 weeks

Diamond I to Elite I

25 to 50 matches

Often a month or more

Elite I to Unreal

60 to 120+ matches

Most of a season, if it happens

The cleanest run we tracked this season went from a fresh reset to Unreal in just over a week of evenings. The player took the top-10 finish every time it was on offer and only forced fights from circle 7 onwards. The slowest climbs we see are always the same profile: great mechanics, 12-kill games, and a 40th-place average because every fight gets taken off spawn.

Season timing matters too. The v42.00 notes confirm Battle Royale ranks reset at the start of Chapter 7 Season 4, and this ranked season is expected to close with the season around the start of November 2026. The first two weeks after a reset are the cheapest progress of the season because lobbies are mixed. After that the ladder settles and the same percentage costs noticeably more matches.

What this data does badly

First, this is a snapshot. Five weeks into a season the ladder is still re-sorting. Bronze is swollen with accounts that played once, and Gold being thinner than Platinum is a timing artifact, not a law of Fortnite. Check again in the final week of the season and the top ranks will be fuller.

Tracker samples also skew toward engaged players. Fortnite Tracker only sees players whose profiles are public and who get looked up, so it leans toward people who care about their stats. That probably overstates the upper ranks slightly and understates the casual base.

The unified rank hides mode differences too. Since v40.00, Battle Royale and Zero Build share one badge, so the distribution no longer tells you whether a Diamond is a builder or a Zero Build specialist. Separate numbers stopped being available at the same time.

And rewards and dates move. Reward names change every season and Epic has changed the ladder structure mid-year before. Treat the reward column as correct for Chapter 7 Season 4 only.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Fortnite ranks in order?

Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Elite, Champion and Unreal. Bronze through Champion each have three divisions (I is lowest, III is highest), and Unreal is a single rank with a leaderboard, for 22 steps in total since the v40.20 update.

What percentage of Fortnite players are Unreal?

About 1.7% of ranked players by our read of Fortnite Tracker data, last checked September 2026. Epic does not publish an official figure, and the share climbs as the season goes on.

What is the average rank in Fortnite?

The median ranked player sits right at the Bronze III to Silver I line, because Bronze alone holds 47.4% of the ladder. Gold already puts you in the top third.

Is Diamond a good rank in Fortnite?

Yes. Diamond and above is roughly the top 16% of ranked players, about the same percentile as Emerald IV in League of Legends.

Do Fortnite ranks reset every season?

Yes. Battle Royale ranks reset at the start of each season, as the v42.00 notes confirm for Chapter 7 Season 4, and you climb again for that season’s rewards. Unreal only protects you until that reset.

Is Bronze 1 or Bronze 3 higher in Fortnite?

Bronze 3 is higher. Fortnite counts divisions upward, so Bronze I is the lowest rank in the game and Champion III is the last division before Unreal.

Recap: 22 divisions, a unified Battle Royale and Zero Build badge, placement and storm circle above everything else, and a ladder where Diamond is already top 16% and Unreal is under 2%. The numbers shift every week of the season, so re-check a live tracker before you quote your percentile at anyone.

If you want the Hack ‘n Slasher, the Overridden Wrap or the Unrealizer before the season closes and would rather not burn your evenings on it, our Fortnite rank boost covers climbs to Elite, Champion and Unreal, played solo on your account or as a duo with you in the lobby.

Fortnite ranks explained: all 22 divisions from Bronze to Unreal, this season’s ranked rewards, and the rank distribution with percentiles for every tier.

[25
58,53
post-2186","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-fortnite","tag-climbing-guide","tag-ranks-explained
["GET
