class="ez-toc-section-end">

Premier runs as a series of Stages, with one Stage living inside most of each in-game Act. A Stage looks like this: six to eight weeks of weekly matches, then a playoff tournament weekend, then a short off-season before the next Stage starts. Your team plays two matches per week during the regular season. They go on the days and times you select inside the Premier tab.

Each week’s weekly match is played on a predetermined map – everyone in your division plays the same map that week, no pick/ban. Map pick/ban only switches on once you reach the playoff bracket, which is where Premier starts feeling like pro play. There’s also one 60-second timeout per match, also lifted from VCT rules.

Wins in weekly matches award 100 Premier Score. Losses award 25. Tournament matches don’t add to PS; they decide your final placement and any promotion. The 600 PS cutoff is straight from Riot’s official Premier promotion update, which lowered it from 675 in 2024. A 6-0 record drops you straight into playoffs, and a 4-4 record still has a chance if your record beats the tiebreakers. Six losses in a row puts you at 150 PS, which is realistically out of contention – this is when most casual teams quietly stop logging in. Don’t be that team.

VALORANT breaks it down.

The six Premier divisions in order

Premier has six divisions, four of which subdivide into five tiers each. Win Open 4 playoffs, you start the next Stage in Open 5 (and if your top 5 MMR has lifted in the meantime, you might skip Open 5 entirely and land in Intermediate). Contender and Invite use a top-standings model instead – top 32 of Contender after playoffs all get pushed toward Invite, and Invite seeds the Challengers conversation directly.

Provisional Division and why your seeding feels off

Every time a Stage starts, your team gets a Provisional Division. Riot’s matchmaker pulls the Competitive MMR of your top 5 rostered players, weights it (heavier toward the highest MMRs when there’s a big skill spread), and assigns you a starting bracket. The first time you load into a weekly match, that division locks in for the Stage.

Two practical consequences. First, a fresh team made of five Immortals doesn’t sit in Open 1. The matchmaker reads your roster and drops you into something like Elite 3 or higher from the jump. We had a stack with three Immortal 2s and two Radiants get Provisionally seeded into Contender on their first Stage together – they lost their first playoff appearance 0-2, but the seeding wasn’t an error. Second, if a roster spot is filled by a lower-MMR friend, that single seat can drag your provisional seeding down meaningfully. The system weights top-5, so a 6th-man Plat won’t matter, but a starter who Plat’d out last season will.

The fix has nothing to do with gaming Provisional placement. You lift the underlying MMR before the next Stage starts. If your competitive MMR is what’s gating your Premier seed, our Valorant rank boost team handles the climb in a window, on your account, so when the Provisional algorithm pulls your top-5 MMR for the next Stage, the number it reads is the one you want. Most of our Premier-adjacent orders are exactly this: lift competitive MMR mid-off-season so the next Stage’s provisional seed lands you in Advanced instead of Intermediate.

Premier vs Competitive: which one to grind

This is the call most new Premier players get wrong. They treat it as a replacement for ranked queue, then panic when their match-day Tuesday loss feels like a real rank-down event. It’s not.

Mechanic

Premier

Competitive (ranked)

Party size

5 fixed (with 1-2 substitutes)

1, 2, 3, or 5 (queue rules apply)

Schedule

Two fixed weekly slots

Continuous, queue anytime

Map selection

Predetermined in weekly; pick/ban in playoffs

Random from active pool

Scoring

Premier Score per match (100/25)

RR per match (variable)

Demotion

None from performance

Yes; can drop tiers and divisions

End-of-Stage / Episode reward

Division gun buddy, title, Champion’s Aura

Episode gun buddy, triangle

Affects the other?

No – Competitive rank is untouched

Yes – feeds Premier provisional seeding

The clean way to think about it: ranked is where your individual MMR lives, and Premier is where that MMR pays off in team form. Your ranked rank seeds your Premier division. Your Premier results never push back the other way. So the optimization order is to climb ranked first – place well, hit Diamond+ before Premier matters to you – and then bring that MMR into a 5-stack to actually use it. Treating Premier as your only climb path is how you end up in Intermediate 2 for three Stages in a row.

The Premier season cycle and what each week feels like

Inside one Stage you’ll touch four phases:

Pre-season (1-2 weeks). Riot publishes the map schedule. Your provisional division is set. Use this window for scrims, agent specialization picks, and an honest VOD review of where you struggled last Stage.

Weekly matches (6-8 weeks). Two matches per week, predetermined map. Aim for 4-2 minimum – that puts you at 500 PS with a loose path to 600. If you start 0-2, don’t dump the Stage. The 25 PS loss bonus means a 3-3 finish still has tiebreaker math going for you.

Playoff weekend. Single-elimination bracket within your division, map pick/ban turned on, real tournament rules. Win the bracket in Open through Elite and you promote. Lose round one and you still keep the player card and any partial rewards.

Off-season (~1 week). Your division resets to Provisional. Promotions process. New Stage map schedule drops.

Practical insider note: the predetermined-map structure is the biggest thing separating Premier from VCT. In a real tournament you’d ban around your weak map; here you can’t, so you have to actually practice the map of the week. The cleanest Open-to-Advanced runs we’ve watched on our clients’ accounts all share the same habit – they treat the Monday-after-schedule-drop as scrim night for that week’s map, regardless of comfort. The teams stuck in Intermediate are the ones who refuse to play the week’s map until the actual match.

Premier rewards: what’s actually worth chasing

Premier’s rewards favor consistent participation over virtuoso play:

Player card. One Premier match in a Stage and the unique player card is yours. The lowest possible bar.

Division gun buddy + title. Win your division’s playoff. Distinct buddies per division, refreshed per Stage. The Contender and Invite buddies are the brag.

Champion’s Aura. A cosmetic effect that follows your card in social and pre-game lobbies for the duration of the next Stage. Personal to you, not tied to the team, so you keep it even if the squad disbands.

Team Tags, Plating, Crests. Added in mid-2025; cosmetics that show on your team profile based on team-wide milestones.

And to be honest, nothing in Premier matters cosmetically next to a Radiant title. The gun buddies are nice, but you should chase Premier for the team format and the climb logic, not the rewards. Anyone telling you to grind Premier for the loot is selling the wrong thing.

What Premier does badly

Three real complaints, all worth knowing before you commit a Stage.

First, scheduling is brutal if your squad lives in different time zones (the r/VALORANT thread). The two-matches-per-week window assumes you can all be on at the same hour twice. If a starter ghosts the match slot, you go 4v5 and lose 100 PS of potential value. Premier rewards groups that already had a fixed weekly LAN; it punishes loosely-affiliated friend groups.

Second, the predetermined weekly map kills variance for or against you. If the schedule lands four of your team’s worst maps in a row, you can play well and still go 2-4. The 600 PS threshold then closes off. There’s no recourse – it’s the same map for everyone.

Third, the off-season feels long. After playoffs you have roughly a week before the next Stage’s seeding lands, and Premier players who don’t grind ranked in that window let their MMR slip – which can drop their next Provisional seed. The mode rewards continuous ranked play even on the weeks Premier isn’t running.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play Premier solo?

No. Premier requires a five-player team.
