Overwatch Director Jeff Kaplan Leaves Blizzard

Blizzard dropped a huge bomb yesterday. Jeff Kaplan the director of Overwatch stepped down and Aron Keller another Blizzard veteran is now leading the project. Across the internet fans are worried about the future of the game. For some Overwatch 2 is dead. In this article we will go through all the details of this unexpected twist in the gaming scene.

Who is Jeff Kaplan?

After 20 years in the company the famous Blizzard dev is out of the picture. Jeff started his career modding a number of games like Quake, Doom, Half-Life and more, but it was with Overwatch that his career skyrocketed. After the failed Titan (A game that never came out) Jeff got a second chance in Overwatch. He is the dev behind the idea of heroes instead of classes, something that would change forever the industry of Hero Shooters. Fusing Mobas and FPS was revolutionary at the time and he was the mind behind that feat.

Jeff Kaplan leaving note

Kaplan left a letter that is full of easter eggs and hints. The main target being Activision we believe. He started by saying he is leaving after 19 amazing years and that quote “it was truly the honor of a lifetime to have the opportunity to create worlds and heroes for such a passionate audience you do the same.” he went on how he wants to express deep appreciation to everyone at Blizzard but at the end he shots: “never accept the world as it appears to be. always dare to see it for what it could be. i hope you do the same gg”. After some known disagreements between Blizzard and Activision about Overwatch specially about having Overwatch F2P or paid with hero unlocking something that we have reasons to believe Jeff was against.

Overwatch 2: Release Date

Is Overwatch 2 at risk? The famous sequel will be built on an award-winning foundation so the community and fans in general are very concerned about the future of the game now. Jeff Kaplan boosted Overwatch to where it is nowadays. Overwatch MMR boost remains as the best way of climbing the ladder but nowadays players with Overwatch coaching can raise in the ladder too and while Overwatch rank boost will be always the fastest way to climb Jeff did have an important part in creating a good environment for rank games. We know Overwatch 2 was announced on Blizzcon 2019 (November 1) but the game still does not have an official release date, although sources are pointing out to 2022. Without Jeff Kaplan how good will Aron Keller handle the enormous pressure of leading the project? These are all legitimate questions fans have.

Will Overwatch 2 levels skins and collections carry over?

Luckly yes! Overwatch Leveling will not be needed in the sequel if you already have your Overwatch 1 account leveled. Blizzard revealed during the Overwatch 2 announcement that skins, sprays, icons, emotes, and other cosmetic items will be carried to the new game. Everything including Overwatch achievements will carry out to the sequel.
