Patch 26.15 turned Aegis of Valor inside out. The LoL autofill compensation system no longer softens your LP loss when an off-role game goes badly. It pays double LP on every autofilled win instead, and the old C mastery-grade requirement is gone entirely. That is the change in one line, and it turns autofill from a cushion into the highest-upside queue state in ranked. You will leave this page knowing what your next fill game is worth in LP, and whether dodging it still pays.

We run climbs on fill-heavy accounts every week, so this one hit our order board the day it went live. For the companion piece on surviving the off-role game itself, read our autofill survival guide. This post is about the LP.

What Aegis of Valor is and when it triggers

Aegis of Valor is a ranked LP modifier that fires when the matchmaker does not give you the role you asked for. Riot introduced it at the end of 2025 to answer the oldest complaint in solo queue, that your rank suffers for games you never chose to play. In its original form, per Riot’s Ranked 2026 dev post, it granted “double LP or full protection from LP loss on an autofilled game if you get a mastery score of C or higher.”

Who qualifies is the part Riot has never spelled out in one place, so here are both sources. The dev post names autofilled players plus priority-role players, meaning support and jungle, who get it “at roughly the same cadence as players who are getting autofilled” but silently, with no pregame notification. The in-client text, quoted by players in an r/leagueoflegends thread, is more specific: it is awarded when you complete a match as “Any Position” or Position Preference 3-5. Take a role you did not ask for and the shield is live, and if you got autofilled proper the client tells you in champ select.

What patch 26.15 changed, exactly

Riot deleted the half of the system that made you play for your scoreboard instead of the win. Their reasoning explains the design better than any summary: “Aegis of Valor has helped make autofill games feel worth playing out, but its loss protection and Mastery requirement created a secondary objective: play for the grade, not necessarily for the win.” So they cut both. Per the patch 26.15 notes, Aegis “will no longer reduce LP losses in the case of defeat, and wins will award double LP without requiring a minimum mastery score.”

Here is the same thing as a grid. Assume a base of 20 LP per game, a modelling assumption rather than a Riot figure.

Your autofilled game Before patch 26.15 Since patch 26.15
Win, C mastery grade or better +40 LP (doubled) +40 LP (doubled)
Win, below C grade +20 LP (no bonus) +40 LP (doubled)
Loss, C grade or better 0 LP lost (full protection) -20 LP (normal)
Loss, below C grade -20 LP (normal) -20 LP (normal)

Two rows changed and they moved in opposite directions: the win-with-a-bad-grade row got twice as good, the loss-with-a-good-grade row went from free to full price. Everything else is untouched.

The LP math, worked out

The C-grade requirement is what made the old version so uneven. Grades are scored against other players on that champion in that role, and an autofilled player is by definition not a role main, so clearing C on an off-role Cho’Gath support was never a given. It was hardest to clear in the games where you were getting rolled and most wanted the protection, and Riot does not publish the grade distribution. Every number below assumes that clean +20 / -20 account; if your gains and losses are lopsided, how LP gains and losses are actually calculated covers why.

Five autofilled games Old rules New rules Difference
4W-1L, C grade every game +160 LP +140 LP -20 LP
3W-2L, C grade every game +120 LP +80 LP -40 LP
2W-3L, C grade every game +80 LP +20 LP -60 LP
2W-3L, C grade on the wins only +20 LP +20 LP no change
1W-4L, never clears C -60 LP -40 LP +20 LP
2W-3L, never clears C -20 LP +20 LP +40 LP

Read the top three rows and the bottom two as two different players, because that is what they are. If you reliably cleared C grade in your fill games, 26.15 is a nerf at every win rate short of a perfect run, and the worse your record the more it costs. If you did not, it is a buff at any win rate above zero, worth 20 LP per win. The reward moved from the disciplined off-role player to the one who just wins somehow, which is what Riot said it was doing.

Autofill is now upside, not a consolation prize

The consequence you care about is the break-even win rate. A normal ranked game at +20 / -20 needs a 50% win rate to hold your LP steady. An autofilled game paying +40 / -20 needs 33%. An autofilled game at a 40% win rate is therefore worth more net LP than a main-role game at 50%, which is not a sentence anyone could have written a year ago.

Your win rate Net LP per autofilled game Net LP per main-role game
30% -2 LP -8 LP
33% 0 LP (break-even) -7 LP
40% +4 LP -4 LP
45% +7 LP -2 LP
50% +10 LP 0 LP (break-even)
55% +13 LP +2 LP

This is why the community reaction split so hard. Players who queue Any Position on purpose found the same table we did, and the high-elo complaint you now see is about leaderboards filling up with people who fill by choice. The counterpoint holds, though: a 33% break-even is only free money if you can actually hit 33% off-role, and a mid main who has not touched jungle since the last durability patch cannot.

An order from this month shows the shape of it. A booster picked up an Emerald 2 account whose owner had autofill toggled off and every queue capped at mid or nothing. Turning autofill back on added roughly a third more games per session at half the queue time, and the double-LP wins covered the rougher off-role losses with room left over. Nothing clever happened. The account just banked 40 LP a win instead of 20 on a bit under half of its games. If you would rather not spend a season learning three new roles to collect that, our team handles League of Legends division climb work on your schedule and queues fill without complaining about it.

Should you still dodge out of an autofill?

Almost never, and the threshold is a number now. Playing the game out beats a first dodge if you win more than about 28% of the time in that role, and beats a second dodge above roughly 17%. Those thresholds assume the commonly reported dodge penalties of about -3 LP and a short queue lockout on the first, around -10 LP and a longer one on the second. Riot does not publish those values, so treat them as community-reported.

The dodge is worse than it looks for a second reason. Riot’s dev post is explicit that autofill status does not reset when you dodge, it carries into your next match, so you pay the cost and re-queue still flagged. At Master and above a dodge counts as a full loss on top of that carryover and the cooldown. You are burning LP to buy the same lobby back. The exception is the genuine no-champion case, where you have nothing playable and no game in that role this season. That one is a real dodge, and the full dodge decision tree covers the rest of the cases where champ select is the actual problem.

Where this reasoning is weakest

The +20 / -20 in every table above is a model, not a measurement. Riot has never published the LP formula, and if your MMR sits ahead of or behind your rank your real numbers can be +28 / -12 or +13 / -27, which moves every break-even in this post. The direction of the conclusions holds. The exact percentages do not.

Two more caveats. Riot has not said whether Aegis LP interacts with MMR at all, and if double LP is visible-rank-only then a fill-farmed climb pulls your rank ahead of the MMR that decides your lobbies. You feel that later, in games harder than your rank says they should be. Removing the grade requirement also changed the shape of the farm-your-way-up pattern rather than killing it, since double LP now fires on any eligible win. All of this lands hardest in the middle of the ladder, where the fill pressure lives: Silver, Gold and Platinum together are about 62% of the NA solo queue population, per op.gg’s tier statistics, fetched August 2026. Riot publishes no official split.

Frequently asked questions

What is Aegis of Valor in League of Legends?

A ranked LP modifier for games where the matchmaker gives you a role you did not pick. Since patch 26.15 it does one thing: it doubles the LP you gain on a win. It no longer reduces the LP you lose on a defeat.

Did Riot remove Aegis of Valor?

No, they refocused it. Patch 26.15 stripped out the LP-loss protection and the C mastery-grade requirement and kept the double-LP-on-a-win half. The system is still live, and it fires more often than it used to now that the grade requirement is gone.

How do I get Aegis of Valor?

Queue off-role. Riot’s dev post points at autofilled players and priority-role players, meaning support and jungle; the in-client wording players quote is “Any Position” or Position Preference 3-5. Autofilled players get a notification in champ select, priority-role players get it silently.

Do I still need a C mastery grade for Aegis of Valor?

No. The minimum mastery score was removed in 26.15. Win an eligible game and the double LP applies whatever your grade was, which was the entire point of the change.

Why do I never get Aegis of Valor?

Because you probably queue your two best roles and get one of them. It only fires on fill or low-preference queues, so a mid main with jungle secondary can go a long stretch without seeing it once.

Is autofill worth playing out now?

Above roughly a 33% win rate in that role, yes. Double LP on a win against a full-price loss means an autofilled game breaks even far below the 50% a normal ranked game needs.

Does Aegis of Valor work in League Classic?

Unclear, and the reports conflict. League Classic runs its own Summoner’s Journey ladder rather than the ranked tiers, and players have posted contradictory client text and support answers. Treat it as unconfirmed until Riot says so plainly.

So autofill is now a coin flip with a weighted coin. You lose full LP when the off-role game goes badly, you bank double when it does not, and the arithmetic says play it out unless you genuinely cannot win a third of those games. Players who reliably farmed a C grade lost something here. Everyone else got a raise. Re-check the live patch notes before you quote any of this at your duo, because Riot has moved this mechanic twice in one year, and if you would rather not learn three roles to collect the bonus, our boosters will run the climb for you and take every fill queue that comes.
