MW4 Ranked Play is not live at launch, and as of this week Activision still hasn’t given it a date. Modern Warfare 4 releases on October 23, and none of Infinity Ward’s launch blogs about progression, weapons or Create-a-Class even mention ranked. That’s normal for Call of Duty. Every recent title has held the competitive playlist back for somewhere between 6 and 16 weeks. This guide covers the MW4 ranked play release date window based on four years of real dates, what is actually confirmed (modes, the CDL connection, who is likely building it), what will probably carry over from Black Ops 7, and what is still a blank.

We play Call of Duty ranked every day, so this is written by people who’ve been waiting for this playlist just as impatiently as you have.

When does MW4 Ranked Play come out?

There is no official date, and anyone quoting one is guessing. The official schedule Activision has published so far runs like this: Campaign Early Access on October 16, DMZ Early Access on October 20, full launch on October 23, then Shipment on October 27, the Possession Halloween mode on October 29, Infected on October 30 and Season 1 on November 6 (launch roadmap, as reported by Gfinity Esports). Ranked Play isn’t anywhere on it. The last MW4 post before launch, Activision’s MW4 progression and Prestige blog, goes deep on levels, Prestige paths and camos and says nothing about a competitive playlist.

What we do have is a very consistent pattern. Here is when ranked actually arrived for the last four Call of Duty titles, with the gap counted from global launch:

TitleLaunchRanked Play startArrived withGap
Modern Warfare IIOct 28, 2022Feb 15, 2023Season 02~16 weeks
Modern Warfare IIINov 10, 2023Jan 18, 2024Mid Season 1~10 weeks
Black Ops 6Oct 25, 2024Dec 5, 2024Season 01 Reloaded~6 weeks
Black Ops 7Nov 14, 2025Feb 5, 2026Season 02~12 weeks
Modern Warfare 4Oct 23, 2026Not announcedNot announced?

The average gap across those four is about 11 weeks. Apply each one to MW4’s October 23 launch and you get a window from roughly December 4 (the BO6 pace) to mid-February (the MWII pace), with mid-January as the middle case. December 4 also happens to be the day the Call of Duty League starts its 2027 season on MW4. That proves nothing on its own, but the CDL and Ranked Play share modes and rules, and ranked can’t really open before the league has published the ruleset it borrows. Our read: don’t plan around ranked before December, and don’t panic if it slips into the new year. Two of the last four games did exactly that.

What is confirmed about MW4 ranked

Three things are on the record. A lot of the MW4 ranked guides already ranking for this search present BO7 rules as MW4 facts, so it’s worth being precise about which is which.

Treyarch is pointing players at MW4

When Black Ops 7 ranked went into its final season, Treyarch closed the BO7 Season 06 patch notes with “Rank up, and we’ll see you again in MW4!” Treyarch has built Ranked Play for every Call of Duty since Vanguard, including the Sledgehammer-developed MWIII, so this sign-off is the strongest hint that the same team and the same system continue into Infinity Ward’s game. It still isn’t a formal announcement, so read it as a very loud wink.

The competitive modes are set

CDL’s 2027 season announcement confirms the league plays MW4 from December 4 with three modes: Hardpoint, Search and Destroy, and Hijack. Hijack is new to MW4 and, in the league’s words, was developed with the CDL in mind. It takes the slot Overload held in BO7. Ranked Play has mirrored the CDL mode list every year, so those three are the safe bet for the ranked rotation.

Hijack, if you haven’t played it: both teams fight over a Data Spike that you can carry, throw or pass to a teammate. Plant it at the enemy Comm Station and it scores points over time, with a bonus if it detonates, while defenders try to defuse it. In public matches it runs 6v6. Every Ranked Play to date has been 4v4, so expect a 4v4 version in ranked, though nobody has published that yet.

The game around ranked is locked

MW4 launches with 33 weapons, 12 core 6v6 maps, a Pick 3 perk system with six perks in each of three categories, killstreaks attached to each loadout, and new Apex Attachments that transform a weapon without using a slot. All of that comes from Infinity Ward’s launch blogs. How much of it survives into ranked depends on the CDL restriction list, which hasn’t been published yet.

What will probably carry over from BO7

If Treyarch is building it again, the BO7 system is the starting template. Our full breakdown of how BO7 Ranked Play works covers it in detail. The short version of what to expect, until Activision says otherwise:

BO7 rankSR to reach it (BO7)Base SR loss (BO7, after the Season 04 overhaul)Status for MW4
Bronze I-III0-20Likely, not confirmed
Silver I-III900-20Likely, not confirmed
Gold I-III2,100-20Likely, not confirmed
Platinum I-III3,600-20Likely, not confirmed
Diamond I-III5,400-20Likely, not confirmed
Crimson I-III7,500-30Likely, not confirmed
Iridescent10,000-40, rising to -65 at 20,000+Likely, not confirmed
Top 250Top 250 by SRSame as Iridescent bandLikely, not confirmed

That ladder has been stable since MWII, which is why we’d bet on it. The SR model is less certain. Treyarch replaced hidden MMR with fully visible SR in BO7’s Season 04: a flat +20 for a win plus scoreboard and underdog bonuses, and bigger losses the higher you climb. The community mostly liked the transparency (the r/CoDCompetitive thread on the BO7 SR overhaul is a good read on how pros and grinders reacted), but by Season 06 Treyarch was already adding bigger SR losses for bottom-of-the-lobby finishes to fight SR inflation. A new game is the natural moment to reset those dials, so expect the structure to survive and the numbers to move.

The other BO7 rules worth expecting back: an unlock requirement (BO7 needed 50 matchmade Multiplayer wins, and wins earned before ranked launched counted), three placement wins for a starting rank, a map-and-mode veto, team forfeit votes, and the CDL weapon restrictions. In BO7 that meant ARs, SMGs, pistols and melee only, with snipers allowed in Search and Destroy. If MW4 copies the 50-win requirement and counts early wins again, every public win you bank now gets you into ranked on day one.

If you’d rather skip the win grind and the placement nerves when the playlist opens, our Call of Duty ranked boost team will be queuing MW4 ranked the day it goes live, with play on your account or duo options. Same SR math, less of your evening.

What is still unknown

Most of these will probably be answered the week ranked is announced:

  • The start date. See the table above.
  • Rank names and SR thresholds. Probably the BO7 ladder, but nobody has said so.
  • The restriction list. The CDL publishes its MW4 rules around kickoff. The open questions are Apex Attachments (several of them, like the Oden’s semi-auto sniper conversion or the Patriot XMR’s stun-dart underbarrel, change a weapon’s whole role), the Overkill perk and loadout killstreaks.
  • Hijack’s ranked format: team size, score limit and which maps it runs on.
  • The map pool. MW4 has 12 core maps at launch. Expect five or six of them in ranked.
  • Rewards. BO7 handed out a weapon blueprint at 5 wins, a decal at 50, calling cards and camos for each rank, an animated camo for Top 250, and a Champion card for the #1 player. MW4’s first ranked season will almost certainly follow that shape, but the items haven’t been shown.
  • Warzone Ranked. MW4 content reaches Warzone with Season 1 on November 6. Nothing has been said about a Warzone ranked mode built on it.

How to get ready before ranked opens

Treat the wait as preseason. Here’s what we’d do with it (one of our boosters spent the BO7 gap levelling every AR to max and walked into placements with the whole restricted pool tuned, which is the kind of boring preparation that makes placement week easy).

  • Level the guns ranked will allow. MW4 unlocks each attachment once and shares it across every weapon that uses it, so levelling ARs and SMGs now pays off across the whole class. The M4 unlocks at Player Level 14 and the ISO Nightshade at Level 4.
  • Learn Hijack in public matches. It’s the one mode nobody has ranked experience in. Passing and throwing the Data Spike is a skill, and the teams that learn it in pubs will farm the teams that don’t.
  • Play Hardpoint and Search and Destroy on the beta maps. Cachette, Lithium, Lotus, Rooftops, Silkworm and Transit 213 were the beta maps. Those are the ones the community already knows, which usually makes them the first ranked candidates.
  • Bank wins. It costs nothing and it might skip a gate.

The case for not caring yet

There’s a fair argument for ignoring all of this for now. Launch-window ranked tends to be the worst ranked of the year. The first weeks of BO6 and BO7 ranked were full of SR rule changes, restriction tweaks and balance patches, and a meta that moved every couple of weeks. MW4 already looks set for the same churn. After the beta, Infinity Ward said it isn’t satisfied with TTK and is still adjusting perk tiers ahead of launch, and a TTK change rewrites which guns are good in ranked. If you only care about a final rank, the best SR you’ll earn usually comes in the second and third ranked seasons, not the first two weeks. And everything in the “probably carry over” section is inferred from Treyarch’s history, with no announcement behind it, so hold it loosely.

Frequently asked questions

Is MW4 Ranked Play available at launch?

No. Activision hasn’t announced a date, and none of the official MW4 launch blogs mention Ranked Play. Every recent Call of Duty added ranked between 6 and 16 weeks after launch.

When will MW4 Ranked Play come out?

It’s unannounced. Going by precedent, the earliest realistic window is early December (BO6’s six-week gap lands on December 4, the same day the CDL season starts), while the slower pattern puts it in mid-January to February.

What modes will MW4 ranked use?

Expect the CDL modes: Hardpoint, Search and Destroy and the new Hijack mode, which the Call of Duty League confirmed for its 2027 season on MW4. Ranked has mirrored the CDL mode list every year.

Will MW4 ranked use the same ranks as BO7?

That isn’t confirmed. Treyarch has run Ranked Play since Vanguard and signed off BO7 with “see you again in MW4”, so the Bronze-to-Iridescent ladder with Top 250 on top and visible SR is the likeliest starting point.

Do you need wins to unlock MW4 ranked?

It hasn’t been announced. BO7 required 50 matchmade Multiplayer wins and counted wins earned before ranked went live, so banking public wins now is free insurance.

When does MW4 Season 1 start?

November 6, 2026, according to Activision’s launch roadmap. Ranked Play isn’t listed in it.

To recap: MW4 Ranked Play has no date, history says somewhere between early December and February, the modes will be Hardpoint, Search and Destroy and Hijack, and the BO7 ladder is the likeliest template. Use the gap to level the restricted guns and learn Hijack before everyone else does.
