The best MW4 loadouts at launch are built around the M4 for almost everything and the ISO Nightshade for close quarters, with the Kastov 762, Oris 8.6 and KG-7 Vulcan covering the roles those two don’t. That’s what the beta data says and what we saw in the open beta lobbies. Most “MW4 meta” class setups you’ll find were built on beta perk slots, though, and Infinity Ward rearranged the perk tiers for launch, so a lot of them can’t be built anymore. Below are five full classes rebuilt with launch-legal perks, the level each piece unlocks at, the beta numbers behind every pick, and the list of things to re-check when the first patch hits.
All of this is launch meta. MW4 has 33 weapons and only 22 were in the beta, and Infinity Ward said on the last beta day that it still wasn’t happy with TTK. Expect the first patch to move things.
The five MW4 loadouts to run at launch
The attachment builds come from wzranked’s beta builds (last updated after the open beta), and the perks are our launch-legal picks from the official perk list. Each loadout takes one perk from each of the three categories.
| Loadout | Attachments | Perks (1 / 2 / 3) | Equipment | Role |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| M4 (unlocks Lv 14) | TZL-110 V1, SA LAZ-500, 45 Round Mag, ZLR Phase Grip, FSS Fireline Grip | Quick Fix / Fast Hands / Combat Grid | Frag Grenade, Flash Grenade, Portable Radar | All-rounder, lane control |
| ISO Nightshade (Lv 4) | FSS Crackdown, ZLR Carbon-900, Schlager Visiv-5, No Stock, Demo STP-1 | Quick Fix / Blood Rush / Battle Hardened | Sticky Grenade, Flash Grenade, DDOS | Entry, objective, close range |
| Kastov 762 (Lv 34) | Hanbit 74U 205.74mm, Schlager Visiv-5, Spetsnaz S10 Stock, FJX Kastov Grip, FSS Fireline Grip | Quick Fix / Fast Hands / Battle Hardened | Frag Grenade, Concussion Grenade, Trophy System | Mid-range damage |
| Oris 8.6 (Lv 11) | EXP Crosstac 22″, XRK Clutch-LS, Lightfir-5 Quick Bolt, Schlager 7x, Bruen R7-TC Grip | High Alert / Ninja / Combat Grid | Sticky Grenade, Smoke Grenade, Portable Radar | Aggressive marksman |
| KG-7 Vulcan (Lv 4) | Haebang Naseon V.5 26″, KT76 Light Bolt, Corvus Avis-0, TT G76-RP Stock, Haebang YNC-45 | High Alert / Fast Hands / Tracker | Claymore, Snapshot Grenade, Portable Radar | Long sightlines |
A few unlock notes so you don’t build something you can’t equip yet. Fast Hands unlocks at Player Level 20, Ninja at 30, Battle Hardened at 12, Tracker at 32, Concussion Grenade at 15, Trophy System at 14 and Claymore at 37. Quick Fix, Blood Rush, Combat Grid, High Alert (Level 8), frags, stickies, flashes, smokes, Portable Radar and DDOS are all available at or close to Level 4, when Create-a-Class opens. Until then, the M4 slot is a Han 86, which Infinity Ward buffed on the last beta day (max damage 22 to 23, minimum damage 18 to 19).
Why most beta classes don’t work at launch
The perk system changed between beta and launch. In the beta, a popular template was Ninja, Fast Hands and Blood Rush on one class. Whether perks moved between the beta and launch was the first thing players asked about, and the r/modernwarfare4 thread on perk changes since the beta is worth a skim before you rebuild your classes. Infinity Ward’s launch weapons and Create-a-Class blog puts all three in the same category. MW4 uses a Pick 3 system, one perk from each of three categories with six options each:
| Perk 1 | Perk 2 | Perk 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Quick Fix (Lv 4) | Hardline (Lv 4) | Lethal Reach (Lv 4) |
| Overkill (Lv 4) | Blood Rush (Lv 4) | Combat Grid (Lv 4) |
| High Alert (Lv 8) | Bomb Squad (Lv 16) | Battle Hardened (Lv 12) |
| Ghost (Lv 24) | Fast Hands (Lv 20) | Scavenger (Lv 28) |
| Resupply (Lv 31) | Ninja (Lv 30) | Tracker (Lv 32) |
| Kill Chain (Lv 48) | Birdseye (Lv 40) | Cold-Blooded (Lv 36) |
Perk 2 is where the hard choice lives. Fast Hands, Ninja and Blood Rush all compete for one slot, so each class above commits to one. Our default is Fast Hands on ARs (faster reloads and weapon swaps win more trades than quiet footsteps on most maps), Blood Rush on the SMG (Tactical Sprint, and kills refill your stamina) and Ninja on the marksman class, which wants to arrive at an angle without being heard. Quick Fix is the Perk 1 default, since health regen on kills and objective play decides chain fights. If you hate UAVs, Ghost (Level 24) hides you from UAVs, Portable Radars and Heartbeat Sensors and is a fine swap.
Why the M4 is the default
The M4 was the beta’s most popular gun by a mile, and the numbers back that up. CODMunity’s MW4 meta page (last updated October 20, and based on weapon stats rather than in-game testing) puts the M4 at a 57.6% pick rate, more than the next four guns combined. Its TTK holds up across ranges: 296ms at 0-10m, 335ms at 10-40m and 422ms at 40-80m in their data. Infinity Ward didn’t touch it in the final beta tuning pass, and at 810 RPM with a 30-round base mag it doesn’t punish missed shots the way the slower hitters do.
The build above leans into recoil control and a 45-round mag, which matters in 6v6 where you often fight two players per life. If you want an optic, the Sportskeeda beta build swapped the magazine for an SZ Micro D-3 reflex. That’s a fine trade on the larger maps.
The M4 needs 72 weapon levels to reach its Apex Attachment, the M4 Hurricane, a 5.7mm bullpup conversion that changes how the gun handles. If you’d rather start launch week with your guns already levelled, our Call of Duty boost team handles weapon levels and camo grinds on your schedule.
Best gun per class at launch
Per-class picks, using CODMunity’s TTK figures and the official beta tuning notes:
| Class | Pick | Backup | Why (beta data) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Assault rifle | M4 | Kastov 762 | M4 422ms at 40-80m; Kastov 308ms at 10-40m but 457ms past 40m |
| SMG | ISO Nightshade | X-58 Nyx | Nightshade 260ms at 0-10m after the Aug 31 buff (max damage 20 to 21, head multiplier 1.25 to 1.3) |
| Marksman rifle | Oris 8.6 | MAR-9 | 95 max damage, but max damage range cut from 20.8m to 19m on Aug 31 |
| Sniper rifle | KG-7 Vulcan | Signal 50 (Lv 50) | KG-7 is available at Lv 4; CODMunity rates the Signal 50 higher once unlocked |
| LMG | Type 73 | FiNN LMG | Type 73 329ms at 40-80m, despite max damage cut from 28 to 22 |
| Pistol | Krait P68 | .50 GS | Krait 251ms at 0-10m; .50 GS holds better at range (440ms at 40-80m) |
Assault rifles: M4, then Kastov 762
The Kastov 762 is the pick if you win most fights inside 40 meters. At 600 RPM it hits harder per bullet, and CODMunity’s numbers give it the fastest 10-40m TTK of any AR (308ms against the M4’s 335ms). It unlocks late, at Level 34, and the recoil is heavier, which is why the build stacks the stock, rear grip and Fireline underbarrel for control. The Patriot XMR (Level 27) is the slower-firing alternative for longer lanes, and the Hyeon Burst is a fun pick for burst fans that the data doesn’t support (480ms at 0-10m).
SMGs: ISO Nightshade
The Nightshade is the only top-tier gun you can use from Level 4, and it got better on the last beta day. The official MW4 beta patch notes raised its max damage from 20 to 21, stretched the max damage range to 10.1m and bumped the head multiplier from 1.25 to 1.3. At 923 RPM it chews through a 30-round mag fast, so the build skips the stock for speed and runs a long barrel for range. The X-58 Nyx has an integrated suppressor and is the late-game swap. The PPSh-41 at 1,110 RPM melts up close, but its damage falls off a cliff past 27.6m.
Snipers and marksman rifles: Oris 8.6 and KG-7 Vulcan
The Oris 8.6 is the aggressive pick and the KG-7 is the patient one. The Oris is a bolt-action marksman rifle with 95 max damage, which is a one-shot to the upper body at close range. Infinity Ward trimmed that range from 20.8m to 19m in the final beta patch, so it is a little less forgiving now. The KG-7 Vulcan is the default sniper at Level 4 with a 10-round mag. Once you hit Level 50, the Signal 50 is the upgrade CODMunity rates higher. The Astaroth .57, a single-shot 14.5mm rifle, wasn’t in the beta at all. Nobody knows yet where it lands, and with a 14.5mm round we half expect it to show up in every killcam by Season 1.
What to re-check after the first patch
When the first patch lands, check these before trusting any class on this page:
- TTK across the board. Infinity Ward said after the beta that it wasn’t fully satisfied with TTK. A global change re-orders the AR ranking first.
- The 11 weapons that skipped the beta: Oden, Cronen Squall, VEL 46, Warlord, APOC-338, Mosin-Nagant, Astaroth .57, Mojave .357 and three launchers. Any of them could take a slot.
- Attachment names. The builds above are beta builds. If an attachment has been renamed or moved, use Gunny, MW4’s built-in attachment optimizer, to rebuild toward the same stats.
- Perk tiers, if Infinity Ward reshuffles them again.
- Apex Attachments. Each one unlocks at max weapon level and changes the gun’s role (the Oden turns into a semi-auto sniper, the Kastov gets an RF pulse barrel). Once players hit max level, expect a second wave of “meta” classes built around them.
- Aim assist. Infinity Ward said further aim assist changes were coming, and those shift controller players toward or away from SMGs.
Where this guide is weakest
Every number on this page comes from the beta or from stats, not from launch-week play. CODMunity marks its own MW4 page as not yet tested in game, wzranked’s builds are from early September, and pick rates measure popularity, not strength. Half the lobby running the M4 tells you it’s comfortable. It might still not be the best gun. The bigger issue is the 11 weapons nobody has fired in multiplayer yet. A launch where one of them turns out to be the best gun in the game would be very on brand for Call of Duty. These are also public-match classes. Ranked will run on CDL restrictions, and if you want to see how much that narrows the pool, here’s how CDL restrictions shaped BO7 Ranked Play.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best gun in MW4 right now?
The M4. It was the most-used gun of the beta (57.6% pick rate in CODMunity’s data, last updated October 20) and has the most consistent TTK from close to long range. It unlocks at Player Level 14.
What is the best SMG in MW4?
The ISO Nightshade, available from Level 4. It got a damage and headshot buff on the last beta day and has the fastest close-range TTK of the main SMGs in CODMunity’s numbers (260ms at 0-10m).
What are the best perks in MW4?
Take one per category: Quick Fix in Perk 1, Fast Hands, Blood Rush or Ninja in Perk 2 depending on the weapon, and Combat Grid or Battle Hardened in Perk 3. Fast Hands, Ninja and Blood Rush all share Perk 2 at launch, so you can only run one of them.
Is the Kastov 762 better than the M4?
It’s faster to kill at 10-40m in CODMunity’s data (308ms against 335ms), but slower past 40m and harder to control. Pick it if most of your fights happen at mid range, and keep the M4 for everything else.
When will the MW4 meta change?
Expect movement with the first balance patch and again with Season 1 on November 6. Infinity Ward said after the beta that it was still tuning TTK, and 11 weapons weren’t in the beta at all.
What is the best sniper in MW4?
The KG-7 Vulcan early, since it’s available at Level 4. Once you reach Level 50, the Signal 50 is the upgrade most stat sites rate higher.
The short version: run the M4 and the ISO Nightshade, keep the Kastov 762, Oris 8.6 and KG-7 Vulcan for the jobs they do better, take one perk per category, and re-check everything when the first patch drops. When you want the levels, Apex Attachments or camos sorted without the grind, our team handles weapon levelling, camos or a ranked climb for MW4.
