Solo/Duo queue: the “real” rank

Solo/Duo – everyone just calls it Solo Queue, even though duos are allowed and common – is the queue Riot built the rest of the ranked ecosystem around. Borders, Victorious chromas, pro contracts, the recruitment scout’s first glance at your profile: all of it indexes off Solo/Duo. The rules:

  • Party size: 1 or 2 players. Solo or a single duo partner. No 3-stacks, no 5-stacks, no exceptions.
  • Rank-gap restriction for duo: You can duo within a one-tier window in most regions. Diamond can duo with Emerald or Plat, not with Bronze. Master+ accounts have stricter duo rules and in some regions can’t duo at all.
  • Independent MMR. Solo MMR is tracked separately from flex MMR; nothing you do in flex moves it.
  • Decay applies at Diamond+. 28-day bank in Diamond at -50 LP/day; 14-day bank at Master+ at -75 LP/day.

The character of solo queue games is the part everyone complains about. You don’t pick your teammates; you don’t pick your enemies; you can’t reliably plan a team comp around what your second pick is going to lock in. Flex queue: the squad queue

Flex queue is the ranked option that lets you queue with friends in groups of more than two. The rules:

  • Party size: 1, 2, 3, or 5 players. No 4-stacks – Riot disabled them because the auto-filled fifth player has no agency in the lobby and gets blamed for every loss.
  • Rank-gap restrictions are looser than Solo. Iron-Diamond can queue together without rank-gap rules. Master+ can only queue with Emerald or higher; the rank gap rules tighten the further up you go.
  • Independent MMR with a 2026 alignment shift. This is the big change worth detailing.
  • Decay also applies at Diamond+, tracked independently from solo. Climbing both queues to Diamond means maintaining decay banks in both at the same time.

The 2026 Flex MMR alignment: what actually changed

For most of flex’s history, your flex MMR was effectively a fresh number that started from somewhere in the Gold-Plat range no matter where your solo rank sat. The result: Diamond-Solo players were stuck stomping their way out of Silver flex placements for the first 20 games of every split, which produced exactly the lopsided lobbies flex was famous for.

The 2026 ranked update fixed this. The mechanic, straight from Riot’s Ranked 2026 dev post:

  • Flex MMR is shifted to overlap with your Solo MMR at the start of the split. If you finished last split Diamond II in Solo, your Flex placements start at a Diamond-tier MMR instead of Gold.
  • Influence is one-way. Solo MMR can pull Flex MMR up to match. Flex MMR cannot push Solo MMR up. You cannot “warm up” your Solo rank by grinding Flex.
  • The Solo-to-Flex alignment is partial, not full. If you’re a Diamond Solo player, your Flex placements start higher than they used to – but not at full Diamond MMR. The system still wants to see Flex performance before granting Flex rank.

The practical effect: Flex no longer feels like a separate skill ladder where the matchmaking is a coin flip. Plat-tier Flex games now play closer to Plat-tier Solo games than they have since 2022. Which queue should you climb this split

The honest answer depends on what you actually want from ranked. Three player profiles, three answers:

You’re a dedicated solo-queue grinder

Stick to Solo. The 2026 alignment makes Flex a more legit grind than it used to be, but the rank everyone benchmarks against is still Solo/Duo. Pro recruiters, third-party site rankings (op.gg’s leaderboards by default show Solo), high-profile streamers – all of it indexes Solo. If you’re aiming for Master+ specifically, every hour you spend in Flex is an hour you could have spent in Solo with the same MMR pressure on the rank that actually matters.

The exception: queue Flex once a week with friends to keep the game from feeling like a job. That’s true at every rank and it’s how the people who actually climb consistently stay sane.

You have a regular 3-stack or 5-stack you want to grind with

Play Flex as your primary, Solo as your secondary. The Flex MMR alignment means your group is going to land in lobbies close to your real skill level instead of stomping Silver lobbies for the first 25 games of the split. That’s the difference between Flex being a “we’ll play three games and stop” queue and Flex being a real grind your group can climb in.

The trap to avoid: don’t try to maintain identical Solo and Flex ranks past Diamond. The double-decay maintenance gets brutal. Pick one as the rank you’re going to actually push and treat the other as a sanity queue.

You’re a returning player who hasn’t played a full split in a while

Play Flex first. The alignment means your starting MMR will roughly match where you actually belong, you’ll get to test your champion pool against real comparable opponents, and you won’t burn your Solo MMR on the first chaotic weekend back. Use Flex as the warmup, then queue Solo once you’ve got two or three champions back to muscle memory.

What the Victorious skin rules actually mean

The headline: flex wins now count toward the Victorious skin requirement. The 15-win threshold for the season’s Victorious skin can be hit across either queue (or any combination). You still need Honor Level 2 or higher to receive the skin, and your Solo rank still determines the chroma you unlock – reaching Gold+ in Flex also unlocks the Flex-rank Victorious chromas.

So if you’re casual and only really care about the skin: pick whichever queue you’d rather play and just hit 15 wins. The alignment between the two has made this a real option for the first time. The minimum-effort path:

  • 15 wins minimum across the two queues, combined.
  • Honor Level 2+ (chat-restricted accounts forfeit the skin, regardless of wins).
  • Honor 3+ if you want the additional honor-tier flair.
  • Roughly 7-10 hours of ranked time at a 50% win rate for the base 15 wins. Faster at higher win rate.

Where Flex is honestly worse than Solo

Even with the alignment, Flex has weak spots that Solo doesn’t share. Worth knowing before you commit a split:

  • Premade comms gap. A 3-stack of mid-tier players plus two strangers will throw harder than any random Solo lobby. The two strangers can’t hear the call going on in Discord; the 3-stack can’t pause their workflow to type it. The result is friendly fire that doesn’t happen in 2-friend Solo duos.
  • Pick/ban negotiation in 5-stacks. The lobby phase of a 5-stack Flex game can take longer than the games themselves. The same negotiation a Clash team would have – except now you’re trying to do it before the queue timer expires.
  • Less Aegis benefit. Autofill is rarer in Flex because the queue is more “everyone declared a role and we agreed on it.” Aegis of Valor active games happen less frequently, which means the LP-protection mechanic is less of a boost in Flex than in Solo.
  • Decay is per queue. Climb both to Diamond and you’re maintaining two separate decay banks. The maintenance cost is real if you’re trying to hold Diamond+ in both queues, and most solo-queue grinders end up letting their Flex rank rot once they hit Diamond Solo.
