The best blind pick mid in League right now is Ahri, and it is not close. On patch 26.20 Emerald+ data she plays 72 tracked mid matchups and loses exactly one of them by a meaningful margin. Behind her sit Lux, Aurora, Viktor, Twisted Fate and Lissandra: mids whose worst common matchup still hovers around a coin flip. This post measures blind-pick safety with tracker data. You get a matchup-spread table with each champion’s worst three matchups and win rates, the mid laners you should never first pick, and how to play the draft seat you were handed.

If you want the concept itself and the safe picks for every other lane, start with our blind pick guide for every lane. This one goes deep on mid only, because mid is where the gap between “strong” and “safe to show first” is widest.

How we measured blind pick safety

A blind pick is graded on its worst case, so we looked at the bottom of each champion’s matchup list. For every mid laner we pulled the Lolalytics Emerald+ counter data for patch 26.20 (the last full patch before 26.21 dropped on October 21; Lolalytics files it under the 16.20 game version), kept only matchups with 300+ games, then counted three things:

  • Matchups below 48%. Lolalytics counts every player’s own rank, which pushes its Emerald+ average to 51.71% rather than 50%. A 48% matchup is therefore close to 4 points under par, which is where a lane starts to feel bad, not just uncomfortable.
  • Worst three matchups, with sample size. A 44% matchup over 300 games against an off-role Gwen is a curiosity. A 46% matchup over 6,000 games against Fizz is a real threat, because you will actually see it.
  • Share of games played in bad matchups. This weights the counters by how often they show up. A blind pick with one ugly but rare counter is still blind-safe.

You can check any champion the same way on Ahri’s Lolalytics counter page: sort by win rate, ignore anything under a few hundred games, and look at how deep the red goes. All figures below are our read of Lolalytics Emerald+ data, last checked October 2026. Riot does not publish matchup win rates.

Best blind pick mid laners: the matchup spread table

Current patch context: data is patch 26.20, Emerald+ ranked solo/duo, last checked October 2026. Patch 26.21 nerfed Viktor and buffed Orianna, Ryze, Taliyah and Azir, and left Ahri, Lux, Aurora and Lissandra untouched (patch 26.21 notes). The ranking is by how few bad matchups each champion has and how rarely you meet them, not by raw win rate.

The worst matchups for the top six are mostly picks you will rarely see mid: Nunu, Gwen, Kog’Maw and Nasus are off-role oddities. Ekko, meanwhile, has the highest win rate of any mid at Emerald+ (53.38%) with only one matchup below 48% (Gragas, 455 games). We kept him off the table because his lane against long-range mages is a farm-and-pray affair below the data threshold, but he is a reasonable blind if you are an Ekko player.

The picks, one by one

Ahri

Ahri is the default answer because her worst matchup that you will meet often, Annie at 49.45% over 3,096 games, is still basically even. Her R gives three dashes that dodge both the enemy laner and the jungler, her Q clears waves from a safe distance, and her charm turns any assassin’s all-in into her kill. Neeko is the only matchup under 48%, and Neeko mid is played in a sliver of games. Who should not play her: anyone who will not hold R for defense. Ahri players who burn all three dashes to chase a kill are the reason her floor ever looks shaky.

Lux

Lux is the most surprising name on the list and also the cleanest spread: zero matchups below 48% across 51 tracked. Her E pushes waves from max range, her W shield absorbs the burst an assassin was counting on, and Q root punishes anyone walking in for melee trades. The closest thing to a counter is Locke at 49.83% over 3,847 games. Who should not play her: players who need to win lane to feel useful. Lux rarely bullies a lane; she makes sure nobody bullies her.

Aurora

Aurora has no matchup below 48% either, and her worst three are all within half a point of each other, which is about as even as a spread gets. She has two disengage tools, her ult zone traps champions who try to dash out of it, and she can rotate to top if your draft shuffles. Her worst common lane is Zed at 49.53% over 2,576 games. Who should not play her: anyone not ready to space carefully in teamfights, because her damage profile needs her to stay alive for the full combo.

Viktor

Viktor’s 72-matchup spread is nearly as flat as Ahri’s. The only lanes that beat him are Nunu & Willump at 46.11%, Zilean at 47.43% and Gragas at 48.63%, none of them standard mid picks. The catch is draft availability: his ban rate was 13.67% on 26.20, so you may not get him, and patch 26.21 dropped his move speed from 335 to 330 and cut his Q shield. That hits his early skirmishing, not his scaling, so we still rate him A. Who should not play him: anyone who cannot farm under pressure for 14 minutes, since his first two upgrades are where the champion lives.

Twisted Fate

Twisted Fate wins games outside his lane, which makes him blind-safe in a different way. His raw lane spread is good (two matchups under 48%, both rare: Gwen and Ziggs), but even when he loses lane, his R turns into a map-wide gank that the enemy laner cannot follow. Patch 26.21 also made his R reveal untargetable units. Who should not play him: solo players who do not ping and call plays, because TF’s value depends on teammates following the gold card.

Lissandra

Lissandra is the anti-assassin blind. Her R on herself stalls any dive, her W punishes melee champions who walk in, and her E lets her pick the fight or escape it. Her worst common matchup is Xerath at 48.48% over 3,562 games, which is an annoying poke lane, not a lost one. Who should not play her: anyone expecting to carry from range, since Lissandra wants to dive in herself.

We have seen this play out on orders. The cleanest mid climbs our boosters log tend to come from a two-champion pool, one from the S tier above and one from the A tier, with first pick going to whichever one is open. The booster who ran Ahri and Viktor through a Platinum account last split did not lose a single game to champion select, and losing to champion select is exactly what a blind pick exists to prevent. If you would rather skip that part of the climb, our League of Legends boost team plays these exact pools every day, on your schedule.

Mid laners you should never blind pick

These champions can be strong, some of them very strong, but each has at least one counter that turns the lane into a coin flip weighted against you. Lock them when you can see the enemy mid, never first.

Ryze46.78%31 of 40Aurora 41.72% (743), Zoe 42.12% (679)

Orianna needs a note, because she is the classic “safe scaling” blind and our own pillar lists her that way. Her kit still fits the profile, but her numbers do not. On 26.20 she sat at 47.91% at Emerald+ with more than half her matchups below 48%, and Ekko and Locke, two of the most common mids in the bracket, beat her hard. Patch 26.21 nudged her Q ratio from 55% to 60% AP and W from 80% to 85% AP, which helps her damage but does not change who walks over her in lane. Until the data recovers, she is a counter-pick into immobile mages, not a first pick.

Syndra is the sneaky one. Her bad matchups are only a couple of points under par, but Fizz and Katarina together show up in over 13,000 of her games. A rare 41% counter hurts less than a common 46% counter, and that is why she lands here despite a decent overall win rate.

Blind pick mid by draft position

Whether you need a blind pick at all depends on your seat. Ranked solo/duo draft runs B1, then R1-R2, B2-B3, R3-R4, B4-B5, and R5 last. Only R5 sees all nine other champions before locking. If you want the community’s take on how the two sides differ, the r/summonerschool thread on blue versus red side is a good read. Our short version: blue owns the first-pick power pick, red owns the last counter.

Your seatWhat you can seeWhat to do as mid
B1 (first pick)NothingTake the strongest safe pick: Ahri, Lux or Viktor if open
R1-R2 or B2-B31-3 enemy picks, usually not midStill a blind pick; any S or A tier from the table
R3-R4 or B4Enemy mid sometimes lockedCounter if their mid is visible, blind-safe if not
B5Four enemy picksUsually a counter; only R5 can answer you
R5 (last pick)EverythingFull counter pick, anything from the never-blind table is fair game

Two habits matter as much as the champion you lock. First, use the pick order swap in champion select. If you are B1 and your top laner has a deep pool, offer to swap so a top or mid counter can sit later; most players accept. Mid and top gain the most from late picks because their lanes are 1v1. Second, if you are stuck blind, pick a champion that can flex. Aurora and Lissandra can both play top, so first-picking them tells the enemy less than locking Syndra does. For the full sequence of bans, swaps and side priorities, our full draft phase guide walks through every step.

Where this list can mislead you

Matchup spreads have blind spots, and you should know them before you build a pool around this table.

  • Small samples look scarier than they are. Twisted Fate’s 43.69% against Gwen comes from 309 games. That is a real signal, but a noisy one, and Gwen mid is rare enough that it barely matters for blind-pick decisions.
  • Win rate is not lane state. A champion can lose lane and still win the game, which is how TF and Anivia keep their spreads flat. If you judge yourself by CS at 15, these picks will feel worse than the numbers suggest.
  • This is Emerald+ data. In Silver and Gold, opponents rarely exploit a counter as hard, so a riskier pick with a higher ceiling can be worth it. Blind-safety matters more the higher you climb.
  • Safe is not strongest. Blind-safe champions are not always the best performers this patch. If you want raw power rankings, our mid lane tier list is the better tool, and Yone, Katarina and Yasuo rank much higher there than here.
  • The patch moves. These numbers are from 26.20. The 26.21 Viktor nerf and Orianna buff will shift both champions within a week or two, so re-check before you commit to either.

Frequently asked questions

Who is the best blind pick mid in LoL right now?

Ahri. On patch 26.20 Emerald+ data she has 72 tracked matchups and only one below 48% (Neeko, 528 games), and her most common tough matchups, Annie and Zoe, are both close to even.

Is Viktor a good blind pick mid?

Yes, with a caveat. His matchup spread is nearly as flat as Ahri’s, but he was banned in about 14% of Emerald+ games on 26.20, and patch 26.21 trimmed his move speed and Q shield. Check his numbers on the new patch before you lean on him.

Is Orianna still a safe blind pick?

Not on current data. She had 23 of 45 matchups below 48% at Emerald+ on 26.20, including common picks like Ekko, Hwei and Locke. The 26.21 AP ratio buffs help her damage, but they do not fix that spread.

Which mid laners should you never blind pick?

Taliyah, Mel, Azir, Aurelion Sol, Akshan and Ryze are the clearest cases this patch. Each has at least one matchup sitting around 41-44% over a large sample.

Should mid take last pick in solo queue?

If your team can arrange it, yes. Mid and top gain the most from last pick because the lane is 1v1 and a counter applies directly. If last pick has gone to someone else, blind a champion from the S or A tier above.

Lock Ahri, Lux or Viktor when you are shown first, save Taliyah, Syndra and the rest for the seats where you can see the enemy mid, and swap pick order when your team lets you.

If you would rather spend your time on the games than on the draft, our division climb or duo queue boost puts an Emerald, Diamond or Master mid player on your account, and they will be playing the safe picks above.
